What’s next for Fayette schools?

The June 30 retirement of Superintendent John DeCotis leaves financially struggling school system with questions

With Fayette County School Superintendent John DeCotis retiring by July 1, the Board of Education must find his replacement. So how will that decision be made?

The board will obviously have the final hiring decision, but there are several available options that could result in coming up with one or more viable candidates for the position.

Attempts were made to obtain input from all five board members since DeCotis made his announcement Feb. 10, but only Marion Key and Bob Todd returned phone calls. Board Chairman Terri Smith and members Janet Smola and Lee Wright are not responding to requests for comments. Wright’s post is up for reelection this year.

Todd and Key said there were four options for use by the board in conducting a search for a new superintendent. To search for and screen candidates, the board could use the services of the state school superintendent’s association, the Georgia School Board Association (GSBA), a private firm with experience in the area of candidate searches, or the school board could do it themselves. Key said the school board used GSBA during the last superintendent vacancy.

Key and Todd said the school board has a preliminary responsibility to decide on the standards for candidates to meet in order to be considered. Examples of those standards include prior classroom teaching experience along with experience as a principal and in a central office environment. The successful candidate should also have a doctorate and a proven track record in planning, budgeting, program development and good communication skills, they said.

Key said the board’s hire of a superintendent is very important and something that requires significant diligence and commitment to accomplish.

“This is the most important decision a board can make besides surviving financially,” Todd said. “The basic question, above everything else, is are we satisfied with the status quo or are we willing to step out and take the risk of finding a superintendent with the vision and courage to go from being a good school system to being a great school system?”

The arrogance of Smith, Smola, and Wright continues to astound me. How odd that none of the 3 will comment on the next superintendent.

These 3 have caused such turmoil for this school district. They have continually demonstrated little concern for or understanding of Fayette employees. They are leading this district down the path of doom. They are too busy to talk to a reporter, just as they are too busy to listen to the "rank and file" employees. They are perfectly content to receive all their input from the isolated and self-serving central office staff.

I'm pretty sure Wright, Smith and Smola's refusal to comment has everything to do with WHO was asking the questions and nothing to do with "being too busy."

This website and these bloggers have consistently antagonized that trio. I would guess that if you personally called one of the three, they'd be happy to talk to you. They're quoted frequently in the area's other media outlets.

If you recall, Smola and Smith boycotted The Citizen's "online candidate forum" in 08, were dragged through the mud constantly here and still got re-elected (rather easily). This stuff goes back a long time. Don't blame Smith, Smola and Wright for the lack of comment -- blame Nelms and Beverly.

Your comment makes me laugh, it is too funny! Ben Nelms asks the right questions. It's obvious to me those questions seem to upset Wright, Smola, & Smith.
Unlike the other local paper The Citizen tells it like it is.

Thank you school board member (a.k.a. Howard Beale) for your comments. Your remarks, of course, are not true. You guys are too busy to talk to the newspaper, but NOT too busy to post here.

For the record, The Citizen did NOT drag these 3 school board members through the mud, the newspaper evidently believes the school members are accountable to the public. Accountability is not something Smith, Smola, and Wright view as important. Again, arrogance is the operative word here - how dare the newspaper or members of the public question their wisdom!

Yeah, I'm a school board member, just like Tug and soundofm are paid employees of the citizen...

I'm not exactly impressed by our current school board, but if you really think the citizen represents our community at large or is the paper out there "asking the right questions" or "holding people elected officials accountable" you're on drugs.

The citizen is fayette's National Enquirer... sometimes it gets something right, but most of the time Cal and company just throw excrement on the wall and hope something sticks.

Use the private firm, take it from the hands of those easy bought off clowns.
