PTC postpones raises for council, city staff

With little discussion, the Peachtree City Council Thursday night “indefinitely” postponed agenda items that could have led to council members and city staff getting an across the board raise.

Mayor Don Haddix, who has in the past argued for a cost of living raise for city employees despite the city’s budget troubles, said while the issue is “near and dear” to his heart, “it is what it is.”

Both votes passed unanimously 4-0 with council member Eric Imker absent.

The council pay raises would have doubled the salary of council members from $6,000 to $12,000 and the mayor’s salary from $9,000 to $18,000.

Adopting the council pay raises would have cost the city $24,750 for the remainder of the fiscal year.

For the city employees, it would have cost $106,362 for a 1 percent across the board pay raise and $212,723 at a 2 percent rate.

That a great decision. Thank you to all our new council members for taking their stewardship seriously and leading the way on this.

Now, lets talk about some across the board pay reductions, only temporary ones until the economy turns. My company and many many others have had to do this and we have KEPT all our employees. It is a time to be thankful you have a job and realize that you have to give some to keep it. City employees, including benefits, are doing quite well and can stand a temporary reduction of salary. This would go a long way to solving our budget problems.

Probably a business trip. Just like the two or three times he didn't show up for campaign events. On one hand, I do like him. On the other hand, I'm not really sure why he signed up for this since he obviously doesn't have time for it.
