The Georgia Dept. of Transportation (GDOT) has issued a travel alert for Thursday for large portions of the state. An incoming winter storm system has the potential for making travel on roadways hazardous.

A winter storm and below-freezing temperatures are likely to result in extremely hazardous driving conditions on Georgia roadways, perhaps well into the weekend in some areas, according to GDOT.

Snow accumulations are possible Thursday and Thursday night roughly north of a line from Columbus to Wilkes County. Below that line, snow, freezing rain and rain are likely.

Anticipated below-freezing temperatures Thursday overnight may result in icing conditions that could be repeated Friday overnight.

Deteriorating weather conditions are predicted to begin in northwest Georgia mid to late morning; metro Atlanta area midday; central and south Georgia mid to late afternoon; continuing overnight in some areas through mid-morning, Friday, January 8.

As the weather system enters their area, the public is strongly encouraged to refrain from all but necessary driving. If driving is required, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511ga.org for current information on road conditions.

Reduced speed, patience and extreme caution are urged at all times. Drivers are advised to stay at least 100 feet behind and to not pass Georgia DOT equipment treating roadways.

Colder than normal winter expected, so keep the bags and you'll use them later. We're no way near done with winter, or the increased heating bills..

Just in case we need it, Gil Roy's has no ice melter, but they have bags of play sand. Home Depot (as usual, doesn't answer ANY of their lines or extensions. Who knows what they do/don't have. Don't care, either. They won't get my business.

Miles Ace Hdwre. on Hwy 54 by Publix in PTC has 20 lb. bags of Ice Melter for $9.99. They have 40 lb. bags, too. And play sand. BUT, they are refusing to offer a refund if we end up not needing it and want to return it. Cheesy, but that's what we have to put up with. The guy there said he's getting in another supply tomorrow, too.

Gonna stay home and hope for no ice. Can tolerate the rain, snow and wind (barely) but can't take the ice.

Is Ace suppose to be some kind of public service provider or a business?
