Auld Lang Syne: 20 underage drinkers jailed

By: Ben Nelms

A central Fayette County man and woman were charged and more than two dozen underage drinkers were cited by Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies New Year’s Eve at the couple’s residence on Green Meadow Lane near Quarters Road. That’s a semi-rural area between Redwine and Ebenezer roads in the south-central part of the county.

Terry Schrepfer, 52, and Holly Schrepfer, 50, were both charged with keeping a disorderly house and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to sheriff’s spokesperson Brent Rowan.

Rowan said deputies were called to the residence by a neighbor who called 911 about a loud party. Officers arrived to find a large number of underage drinkers on the premises, he said.

Deputies took 20 underage drinkers ages 17-20 to jail on charges of possession of alcohol by a minor, Rowan said, adding that two of those were also charged with obstruction for running from police.

Also cited for possession of alcohol by a minor were seven teenagers under the age of 17 who were placed in the custody of their parents, Rowan said.

A Richard Thompson

This subject is addressed in my new book Jitterbuggers Teen Club: Communities and Teens in Action to be released spring 2010 by firm that published my first sci fi thriller The Terror Trail www.Trafford.com

My new book profiles the Teen center I ran in Fayette Peachtree City in 1999-2001 Many of the kids came to get away from alcohol abuse by their peers and parents. We sponsored New Years Eve lock ins for 50 kids in 1999-2000 and again in 2001. Structured and safe facilities are the key for this type of party action to avoid drinking and abuse and violence. Kids from all high schools and middle schools attended.

My book will discuss establishing , fund raising and working with the 6 critical areas of a counties leadership to ensure quality support. It also includes a DVD of activities at center and music and important milestones achieved in this demonstrative how to book for communities.

Without these areas the teen center will fail (remember The Market in summer 2000?)

Call or write me for more information By the way, the Citizen Newspaper was one of my best supporters and also wrote great articles about the teen club and when I ran for city council on a pro youth ticket and afterward PTC endorsing my teen center action plan to make the go ahead in spring 1999.

Isn't this the same woman who helped with Chris Benoit's dogs after the murders? What is wrong with this neighborhood?

Honestly, Spyglass, stay away from my children. I don't need you deciding whether they are old enough to drink alcohol.

Submitted by Bucky on Wed, 01/06/2010 - 9:03pm.

Spoken with all the ignorance of someone who has no idea what they are talking about. The law is the law. We don't get to choose which one we think are real laws and disregard the others. You say that it's ok to serve and die for your country but not drink. Obviously you or no one in your family has earned the honor of serving this country. If you did, you would know that it is perfectly legal to drink beer or wine in any U.S. military installation as a member of any branch of service at the age of 18. Yes, you can die for your country at 18 and you can also have a beer too. I think these fine men and women deserve the exception not the children of Fayette county. As stated by jevank, I too hope you and your thoughts never cross paths with my children.

Submitted by Spyglass on Thu, 01/07/2010 - 9:54am.

And obviously you and I disagree. It's not the end of the world. Reasonable folks can disagree.

As to why you think I'm advocating yours ( or anyone else's children for that matter) should drink alcohol, I'm perplexed. I never implied that should be the case.

I have kids at my home all the time, cookouts, firepit fires etc....believe me, we agree more than we disagree on this.

I'm talking about ADULTS.

Submitted by Spyglass on Wed, 01/06/2010 - 3:02pm.

they aren't old enough. I was referring to adults, persons of legal age. I think they are old enough to make that decision, especially when they are out in public on their own.

In your house or mine, the house rules dominate, no doubt. That said, the parents providing the booze are certifiable nuts and should and will face charges.

Submitted by pammieor on Wed, 01/06/2010 - 3:50pm.

where did it say the parents supplied the booze, i'd like to know!

Submitted by Spyglass on Thu, 01/07/2010 - 9:52am.

But a little bird told me that very well may be what happened...at least some of it.

Submitted by pammieor on Thu, 01/07/2010 - 4:02pm.

you weren't even there...you know nothing...i know for a FACT the parents did not supply the alcohol..rumors rumors...don't believe everything you hear.

The drinking age is 21 so it's against the law in this country for drinking "booze" under 21. It's agianst the law to buy it, provide, consume it, and/or allow it for under age kids!

If the same kids were driving under the influence or excessively speeding and killed someone they they would be punished for breaking the law...this is not different.

Submitted by Spyglass on Wed, 01/06/2010 - 3:03pm.

I disagree with the law. But I do not advocate breaking it.

When is the hanging? This cannot stand.

I have no clue what your comments about someone getting killed have to do with the price of tea in China.

...with this archaic standard/law. Given that if parents wish to host such events they merely need to keep the numbers within their span of control. Otherwise, they pay the piper.

Now, if kids are being responsible and noise levels are reasonable other than the Ms Cratchett types, who the hell cares?

Submitted by Im just saying on Wed, 01/06/2010 - 2:17pm.

Seriously, Do you really think the party was this tame? I know it was more than reported, I live nearby. This is not a true press release of what actually happened. There was many more than the numbers reported above. Atleast 100+ kids partcipated in illegal activity. This article makes it sound like it was not a big deal and the below comments make it sound like the kids didn't do anything wrong. The noise, trash, property damage, etc. seemed more like 300 kids. If it was a few kids just "accused" of drinking alcohol by other teens, then I might consider it tame, but over 100 kids involved and many given citations or arrested by the police while K9's searched/found drugs is not a "tame" party. There were kids that got physically violent with the police officers, many kids stayed in jail for 2 days, parents were arrested and you think that is okay? I hope the school system doesn't brush it under the rug like nothing happened, they will never learn a lesson if they do not suffer the consequences for BREAKING THE LAW. Yes some of them are old enough to join the military, vote and have sex but it's against the law to drink under 21 and they broke the law.

I've heard of lots of bad behavior with kids all over Fayette County, but nothing of this significant size. I find it interesting that Starr's Mill is rarely in the Citizen for negative press. If it was Whitewater, McIntosh, Fayette County or Sandy Creek kids everyone would be dragging the kids, school and parents through the mud. Does someone at the Citizen have a reason to keep it out of the paper? Shame on all the kids for making bad decisions, shame on ALL the parents that knowlingly allowed it, shame on the person(s) that provided the alcohol, shame on the Citizen for not reporting accurately, probably shame on the Starr's Mill High School Administration for brushing it under the rug. The truth is these kids are spoiled rich popular athletes and their parents will hire lawyers to keep them out of trouble. I guess that explains what's wrong with our country today...no responsibility and no consequences.

Your an iddiot. Dont even comment on crap you dont even know about.
Whats the point of trying to get the kids in trouble at school??? to learn a lesson?? there are no lessons learned jus futures ruined. And if u think ur kid is so damn good, he or she was probly at that party! the parents did it so it was safe place for teens to do what teens do. and iddiots like you call the cops and get all of them in trouble. u should be ashamed.

"And the only thing you people look at is spelling..".

Wrong! I admit that I did look at the spelling; but not exclusively. I also saw the improper capitalization of words, improper construction of contractions, weird tense usage, incomplete sentence structures and faulty punctuation.

You say that you think you know how to spell. Trust me, you do not. I'm hoping that you are still in elementary school because you appear functionally illiterate. Trust me on that too. You need to get to work studying. Otherwise, even if you manage to graduate, your job prospects are going to be limited to carrying a stick with a nail in the end of it up and down the ditches stabbing discarded hamburger wrappers which have words printed on them that you will have to struggle to read.

My fear is that this youngster is so locked into technology, that he has no basic communication skills! Your advice is good - liberal/conservative/ whatever - our kids need to value basic education.
Oh well - back to TV.

This time they were actually caught and some got arrested so if there was any property damage their parents will have to pay for it.

This isn't the first time and it won't be the last. As you can see from many of the posts here many people think this type of behavior is acceptable. Since people find underage drinking and assaulting a cop(if that is what happened) acceptable or normal behavior we will get more of the same. This behavior wouldn't happen if it was not encouraged by the "parents".

Is assaulting a police officer still a felony?

Submitted by Im just saying on Wed, 01/06/2010 - 2:12pm.

No mention of the kids that ran and got away? No mention of the actual number of kids participating? No mention of who provided the alcohol? No mention of the K9's and illegal drugs? No mention of all the parents that allowed their kids to be there and knew that they would drink illegally? Don't place all the blame on the kids mentioned in article...there's many more at fault in this situation!

Submitted by mlc2028 on Wed, 01/06/2010 - 2:04pm.

They had a similar party last fall after the Starrs Mill homecoming game. My child and a few friends went. She called me to pick them up because the sheriff's were on their way. My child told me a bunch of kids were drinking. When I arrived to pick them up there were cars and kids running from the house as fast as they could.

Submitted by LittleMan on Fri, 01/08/2010 - 1:00am.

Dont send ur kid then. ur just as much as fault so dont go blameing anyone.

You wrote , " If you're old enough to die for your country, vote, and have "consensual" sex, one would logically conclude that you are old enough to consume alcohol on private property."

Because its the law. Also for the police to be called to the residence, something had to occur, perhaps maybe someone was worried about one of those KIDS leaving the party behind the wheel of a car.The old arguement about serving ones country is an old one, if you can serve, then you have enough common sense to simply follow the law, yes?

Age doesn't define how mature someone is mentally.

If you're old enough to die for your country, vote, and have "consensual" sex, one would logically conclude that you are old enough to consume alcohol on private property. Arresting the under 17 bunch I can understand UNLESS they had their parents permission to be at that private location and consume alcohol at that private location.
Past that, it's just more revenue gathering.

On July 17, 1984, President Reagan signed into law the Uniform Drinking Age Act mandating all states to adopt 21 as the legal drinking age within five years. By 1988, all states had set 21 as the minimum drinking age, which is where it should remain.

and take a chance that one of those kids would beat us up or destroy more of our property? (the same kids that hit police officers) No thank you, our neighbors prefer to call 911 and have the police handle the unruly behavior, property damage etc. I agree that many of the kids at the party are normally good kids and probably guilty by association, but there were many kids that needed the police to control their bahavior.
