My son had to go for a special job for his company in Holland. As it would last four months, and being a single father, he needed to take his two kids with him. He went to Starr’s Mill High School to look into keeping the kids’ school books so they could keep up with their class. He was refused even though he offered to pay a deposit or outright buy the books. Two friends of my 15-year-old granddaughter wanted to come to the U.S. for a visit, part of the time school starts here. My son went to Starr’s Mill to see about the two girls sitting in a few classes. He thought the girls could be invited to take a few minutes and tell about their country and answer a few questions. My son was told the girls would not be allowed on campus. I am very ashamed of the school board and administrators. Are they so strict that allowances can’t be made?

Who had the bright idea to start a major road project on an arterial road leading to a school three weeks before school begins?

Whitewater High School, are you serious? Your website prominently states that your office is “Closed on Friday’s.” [Editor’s hint: Plurals in English are almost never formed by adding an apostrophe and “s.”]

S.O.S. or Save Our Summers. That should be the slogan for a new movement in this county. We cannot be the only parents in Fayette County who would like to see our summer extended by several weeks. Here it is mid-summer and we are getting ready to go back to school. Our summer vacation season is down to eight weeks only. What working parent can take a week vacation in June and then again in July? Time with our children is precious and valuable. In just a few short years these kids will be grown and off to college and not even want to be with their family. Why can’t we go back to school two or three weeks later? let us have more time with our families to enjoy life without homework, papers, tests, etc. No wonder why so many are turning to home-schooling. You all get the point; now do you agree?

A Free Speecher inquired why cyclists sometimes on roads in Fayette are outside the white line rather than inside the white line where there appears to be room. Good question. First, a car is driving down road. Cyclist is inside white line. Motorist has to wait for oncoming cars to pass and then motorist can go move to left and pass cyclist. Why doesn’t cyclist ride inside the white line? Answer: It is the white reflector “drunk bumps” that are optional and appear only on some roads and not on most. Those drunk bumps can cause a cyclist to lose control and end up in a ditch, or worse, swerve into or fall and slide into the path of a car following behind. The center of the road has a yellow line, either broken or solid. On the right side of the road is a white stripe called the fog line. It is there to show motorists the edge of the road. If the motorist can’t see the white line, he or she should stop driving until (a) the storm passes (b) they sober up or (c) they get new glasses. There really is no need for these bumps. Without the drunk bumps, cyclists will move a full two feet to the right. In fairness to the Fayette road department, would someone please post a response here under Free Speech explaining why these drunk bumps are necessary on only some Fayette roads? I hope all of these new, expensive roads Fayette is building will have bike lanes. Will they?

Why do people rent houses when they obviously have no interest in maintaining a lawn? I suggest that you stick to apartments or condos; that way you have someone do the work for you. You’re just depreciating the property value of homeowners with the misfortune of having rental properties in their neighborhood.

County eyes change in leave policy by considering a staff proposal (are the inmates running the asylum?) to change the way employees are credited upon retirement for accrued sick leave. Seems the Fayette County Commission is considering spiking the defined benefit plan for vested employees by allowing 100 percent of sick leave to be converted to credited service. It is estimated that pension spiking costs California taxpayers $100 million a year for additional pension payments. Fayette County taxpayers, are we in line to be spiked as well as SPLOSTed?

Attention Kroger shoppers: Thank you for choosing to shop at your Town Center Kroger. The concept is quite simple: one way in and one way out. When the remodeling is finally complete, you will enter at the entrance on the produce side of the store and exit through the doors at the registers. Be sure to look both ways before crossing the parking lot and thank you for Krogering.

To certain inconsiderate dog owners on the Jeff Davis Plantation and The Woodlands subdivisions in Fayetteville. Please consider your neighbors when your dogs are barking at 4 a.m. and constantly during the day. Do you not hear them or do you have selective hearing?

Seeing the news about the boxer getting shot (with a 12-year-old in his car) just ices the cake. He seemed to be a nice man that gave back. You can’t go into Atlanta without fearing for your life, especially after 6 p.m. Hey, with a President making comments using the word “stupidly” to address law enforcement, need I say more? We all have families we care about. Are you not scared for what is happening in our country? Crime is scary, and jobs going to illegals is unacceptable. When we are no longer here, what shape will our country be in for our loved ones? God bless us all.

Wow! I not only 'see' the drawers - but also smell the donuts!! What wonderful memories. Was there a 'sound' that went along with the truck - or was that the ice cream truck? We would give the driver our money - and he'd hand us the donuts on a white paper thing. As he drove off, we'd sit down on the curb and eat! Pure heaven. Thanks for the memory!

unique horn.

Oh Oh Oh, do you remember getting your milk from the "milk man". They would drop off those pint milk bottles in those wire baskets. Heck, I remember when Gardena and parts of Torrance were nothing but cow yards.

yeah - now I remember. We had the Adohr man - with the 'cream' at the top of the bottle. He came early in the morning - and I had to get up and bring the milk in. (Cheaper than driving to the store now days!) There was a dairy somewhere on Century (I think) that we would visit as a class. Gosh - I remember picking 'greens' from the area near Crenshaw and MLK (Used to be Santa Barbara)

as well. I never did acquired a taste for mustard greens. But they still grow out there. I was surprised during my drive up the coast last week from San Diego to LAX that I didn't smell any wild licorice down by San Onofre.

I couldn't find the area where we were discussing rap or hip-hop music, but thought this article was interesting in the Living & Arts section of the AJC this morning. The title of the article is "Why does color still define hip-hop?" I asked my grandson, who is a music major, what he thought about the article. The response? Why is the media making this an issue - it's not an issue with those who enjoy the 'music'? I remember your comment about hearing this 'music' during your travels outside the US - and the change of the demographics in LA and who might be blasting the music from their cars. The kids who like the music evidently could care less about the color of the performer. My grandson made a good point - the movie producers are interested in one color - green. Will the music sell; will the performer connect with the audiences while on tour? The music business may do a lot to overcome 'racism' in this country. Now if someone could just get the younger generation to roll up his or her windows and turn down the volume - the older generation finds the loudness aggravating! Hopefully, the media will not continue to fire the color-flames in the older generation.

Story

According to the video she ate the fries and then complained. Judging by her dress size she needs to layoff the fries. I have. Smiling

Thew woman's dress size is caused by her genes!

Her great-grandfather, etc., had to eat too much pig lard fat and pig skins! Altered their genes during slavery.

I have the same problem although I am white, pirates captured my old relatives and ged them very poorly as slaves. Never even got any rum!

What are the dealers doing with those old cars they take for the government?
Send them to Cuba?
Sell to a chop shop?
Sell them back onto the road again?
The government is storing them in the desert?
I'll take a 10 year old Crown Victoria some guy traded in!
Maybe Mike knows?

Could not agree more. Besides ruining vacations and summer jobs for high schoolers the push towards a year round schedule is not useful. And based on graduation rates in GA it is not effective as we were told by proponents. In addtion, running the A/C in August has got to be expensive. Who will be the brave board member to show leadership and push for a 160 day schedule now allowed by the state with extended school hours. Start in September, cut out all the stupid teacher work days and still end in late May. With the need to reduce the school budget this needs to be a priority for 2010. And to the parent who's son wanted the adminstrators to be flexible with school policy, it is a sad fact but true that our country has forced school officials to be compliance monitors and not decision makers. I am sure that this was some sort of school policy, insurance, and legal risk issue.
