FreeSpeech for 05-06-09Tue, 05/05/2009 - 3:05pm
By: The Citizen
At a time when it seems that bashing local law enforcement is the in thing, I was really proud of three Peachtree City officers who were evidently on their way to Fayetteville on the morning of April 29 in their patrol cars. They came upon an accident at Ga. Highway 54 and Brandywine Boulevard in Fayetteville and immediately took control of the situation, assisting with traffic control and helping those possibly injured until the Fayetteville officers, medics and fire personnel could arrive. Thanks, guys! You made me proud to be a Peachtree Citizen. - - - - - - - - - - - - To the 50-year-old who has worked hard, is in the highest tax bracket and says he would give the shirt off his back (although he’s undoubtedly against any social programs that provide shirts to poor people): you got one very key thing wrong in your comments about Obama and taxes. He is not raising your taxes “for the lazy people who expect the government to support them.” He is considering raising your taxes to make up for the countless mistakes President Bush made over the last eight years. Hmmm. I wonder who YOU voted for? - - - - - - - - - - - - In regards to the so-called Fayetteville Bypass, I’m not sure why improvements to the existing Sandy Creek Road will not satisfy all the perceived needs of your traffic “problem.” Why not put the cars onto Ga. Highway 74 North near I-85? To those of us living in north Fayette County, dumping out a few more cars onto Ga. Highway 92 North appears to be a silly idea. What this ill-informed plan does do is decrease the time frame for ne’er-do-wells to come into our county from Old National Road and Fulton County. If the attempt is to lessen their getaway time from breaking into our homes in north Fayette to getting back to where they stay, I believe you have solved that problem. It appears the main thrust is to simply force an unwanted, and I believe unneeded, road down the public’s throat just to spend the SPLOST money. Why not do the right thing and improve an existing road and leave it at that? - - - - - - - - - - - - Thank you and amen to the Free Speech writer who defended the law that prohibits prayers in our public schools. Why are we still having this argument? Why can’t Christians get it? This country was founded on the idea of religious freedom. That means freedom for everyone, including those who want freedom from all organized religion. That means freedom for thinking people who understand that manners and morals can be taught without the aid of Biblical fairy tales like talking snakes and virgin births and a God who can turn you into a pillar of salt. Parents who believe their children need to be scared into good behavior can pay for the brainwashing at a private Christian school. But for God’s sake, let’s keep our public schools free. - - - - - - - - - - - - To the vitriolic Free Speaker who last week declared that “Obama’s vision of bringing people together is officially a failure”: Let’s see, you have made your judgment after the man has been in office 100 days. It may take a little longer than that to correct the disastrous course set by G.W. Bush and his kind, nearly destroying our economy at home and our credibility abroad. It is radicals like you who keep this country divided, ranting your right-wing opinions, labeling anyone who does not agree with you as “anti-American.” Well, thanks to freedom of speech, you are entitled to spout nonsense. But remember that the majority of American citizens do not agree with you. It’s easy to forget that when you live deep within a block of states that is seriously out of touch with the rest of the nation. You might want to remember something: Your section of the USA has been been on the wrong side of history before. - - - - - - - - - - - - Thank you, Kevin King, for your excellent editorial on “Scary talk from conservatives,” published in the April 29 issue of The Citizen. It is heartening to know that there are indeed some moderate, logical thinkers living in Fayette County, Ga. Every time I get ready to pack my bags and move back north where sub-zero temperatures seem to keep heads cool and in good working order, I come across a piece of writing like yours. Apparently, reason can flourish here, too. login to post comments |
