Traffic improvements coming to Hwy.54Early next year drivers should see improvements to the intersection of Ga. Highway 54 East and McElroy Road. The Board of Commissioners recently finalized an agreement with DOT to install turn lanes and a traffic signal at the intersection. Turn lanes will be placed on Hwy. 54 for drivers from both directions who wish to turn onto McElroy Road. Also, for drivers exiting McElroy Road onto Hwy. 54, both right and left turn lanes will be added. The addition of a traffic signal will complete the project. Double drug bust in FayetteFive men were arrested July 5 in two separate busts on crack cocaine and methamphetamine “ice” charges. Kelley Lamont, 27, of Augusta, Jarquay Hillsman, 17, of College Park and Mazo Jones, 28, listed as homeless, were charged in the first bust with sale of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, according to Fayette Sheriff’s Drug Suppression Task Force Commander Mike Pruitt. Union City Planning Commission June 26 conducted a whopping 137 public hearings on the proposed rezoning and annexation of remaining unincorporated islands located within the city. Commissioners voted to recommend the measures while a near-empty chamber room heard the repeated echoes of three affected residents who opposed the plan. More development headed for PalmettoPalmetto City Council voted 5-1 Thursday to approve the rezoning and annexation of the 98.6-acre property belonging to the Hugh Johnson estate. Located along the west side of Ga. Highway 154 on the north side of the city, the property is the location for the proposed development of a 144-unit subdivision.
