Clothes Less TraveledCelebrating 10 years of service By Sheila Baldwin If you have ever had an excess of clothes or household items or needed to buy an item for a reasonable price, you may have discovered Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop (CLT) on Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City. For over 10 years many volunteers have put in countless hours sorting, displaying and selling gently used items all for the purpose of helping the local community. It is difficult to measure the impact that this ministry has had on Fayette County when one considers its longevity as well as the wide range of benefits it provides. The mission statement, which is posted on its website (www.clotheslesstraveled.org), emphasizes the goal to provide an atmosphere for the community to buy decent things at a reasonable price, to offer a means of community service and to contribute the profits to worthwhile organizations to meet their needs. Young scholarship winners honored at annual banquetKathryn Carter, daughter of Georgia Power employee Tim Carter, and Ashley Dettmering, daughter of Georgia Power employee Matthew Dettmering, were two of 22 high school students to receive a Georgia Power scholarship at an awards ceremony held June 14 at the company’s corporate office in Atlanta. Lafayette at 250The 250th anniversary of the birth of the Marquis de Lafayette, whom Fayette County as well as its county seat Fayetteville, was named for was marked on September 6 of this year. Local royaltyFayetteville resident Brianna Burton recently competed in Orlando, Fla. as a representative for Georgia at the American Royal Miss national finals. She competed in casualwear, interview, talent and beauty. Burton will spend the next year traveling throughout the United States representing her title of national ambassador. Locals graduate from UGA’s College of Veterinary MedicineShavonne Christina Corbet and Staci M. Murphy, both of Peachtree City, Ga., received their doctorates in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine on May 5, in Athens, Ga. Notables 10-3-07• Schultz graduates from the U.S. Air Force Academy Air Force Cadet Tyler A. Schultz has graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The graduate received a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. The academy offers a four-year educational program of instruction and experience designed to provide cadets the knowledge and character essential for air and space leaders, and the motivation to serve as Air Force career officers. The curriculum provides a balanced program of military training, academics, physical training, athletic conditioning, and character and ethical development. The courses of study allow cadets to acquire a broad education in the basic and engineering sciences, social sciences, the humanities, including additional elective courses needed to complete requirements for one of 25 major areas of study. The new lieutenants go on to serve as pilots, navigators, engineers, maintenance officers, professionals in various management and technical fields, and some attend medical or graduate school with special scholarships, while others go directly to non-rated Air Force-wide assignments. The officer is scheduled to attend undergraduate pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base, Columbus, Miss. He is the son of Chris A. and Sue J. Schultz of Peachtree City, Ga. Schultz is a 2003 graduate of McIntosh High School, Peachtree City. World Airways raises funds for Christian CityAt their employee luau, the Employee Connection Team at World Airways headquarters in Peachtree City, Ga. raffled off two round trip tickets to Hawaii and donated the proceeds to the Home for Children at Christian City. President of the employee group, Susan Wycoff, presented Christian City with over $500 to help support the abandoned and abused children that live in the cottages on Christian City's campus. Located in Union City, Christian City is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization that meets the needs of children, retiring seniors, the elderly and the infirm. Sock it to me!GayLynn Barson, L, Nancy Burley and Lauren Kosiba, R, participate in the creation of the world’s largest sock. Area knitters gathered at Books-A-Million in Peachtree City recently to be a part of the Guinness Book of World Records for the ongoing creation of the sock. The sock was begun in Great Britain and was temporarily being cared for by the Atlanta Knitting Guild. Now at age 10, Fayette Middle School sixth grade student Virginia Lambert has been selected one of 10 young writers nationwide to spend a year reporting for Time online and magazine publication, Time For Kids (TFK). As a member of the TFK news team, Lambert will cover local and regional assignments from now until August 2008. Grammy-winner Ann Nesby releases new albumFayetteville resident’s album now in stores Fayetteville resident Ann Nesby, who led the Grammy Award-winning group Sounds of Blackness, has just released her latest solo project, “This Is Love,” this week. Poised to bring soul music forward stronger than ever on today's music scene, Nesby’s career has seen success in every creative field she has entered. As a singer, Nesby has dominated the R&B charts, landing at the number 1 and 2 spots on Billboard's Dance Charts. She worked with legendary soul singer Al Green on a duet for her 2002 release, “Put It On Paper,” which yielded a Grammy nomination in 2003. Schneider gets artsy for Eagle Scout projectOver the summer, Austin Schneider led his Boy Scout Troop 275, as part of his Eagle Scout project, to renovate the art room at Booth Middle School for visual arts teacher Victoria Perez. The boys emptied numerous shelves of art supplies, including drawers and cubbies. They then sanded, primed and painted wood shelves to go into the art room. Schneider will also be building 8-foot shelves to allow the students space to place clay projects waiting to be fired by the new kiln they will be receiving. Photo/Special. Young writers get publishedAt the end of the 2006-07 school year, students in Susan Holcombe’s fourth grade gifted class at Spring Hill Elementary entered essays in the Creative Communication, Inc. writing contest. Sassic, from Peachtree City, Ga., has been selected for membership. The society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the Swedish Nobel family. Notables 0926• Lorber graduates from United States Air Force Academy Secon lieutenant Benjamin J. Lorber graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. on May 30 with a bachelor of science degree in physics. Lorber maintained placement on the deans list all four years at the academy and received special recognition from the physics department for which his name was added to a permanent display in the department office. Upon graduation, Lorber was commissioned into the United States Air Force. He is currently attending Air and Space Basic Course at Maxwell Air Force Base after which he will begin pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. He is the son of Michael and Robin Lorber of Peachtree City and a 2003 graduate of McIntosh High School, Peachtree City, Ga. Tennis in the 'Hood Helps Youngsters to LearnWhen Jinaki Wilson was growing up in the Delta of Mississippi, it never occurred to her that she would one day be teaching tennis to youngsters with one or more incarcerated parents in Georgia. Fayette Law Enforcement Receives Bicycle Traffic and Crash GuidesGEORGIA BIKES!, a statewide bicycle advocacy organization, has released a safety oriented publication, the Georgia Bicycle Law Enforcement Pocket Guide. This guide, the first of its kind for Georgia, provides a ready reference about traffic laws and safety standards for law enforcement officers and others who are faced with the task of enforcing traffic laws or investigating crashes that involve cyclists. The local biking organization, Fayette Biking for Life, has distributed the Pocket Guides to each law enforcement agency in Fayette, along with informative brochures from the Southern Bicycle League (SBL) (“Cyclists: Don’t Be a Road Warrior/Motorists: Don’t Be a Road Hog”). Fayetteville Mayor Declares Sept 17-23 as Constitution WeekMayor Ken Steele recently proclaimed Sept 17-23 as Constitution Week in Fayetteville. In the proclamation, Mayor Steele asked all citizens to reaffirm the ideals of the Framers of the Constitution had by protecting our freedoms. This year marks the 220th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution.
