Kathryn Carter, daughter of Georgia Power employee Tim Carter, and Ashley Dettmering, daughter of Georgia Power employee Matthew Dettmering, were two of 22 high school students to receive a Georgia Power scholarship at an awards ceremony held June 14 at the company’s corporate office in Atlanta.

Georgia Power President and CEO Mike Garrett presided over the ceremony and made the scholarship presentations.

"Since 1988, the Georgia Power Foundation has been helping students across Georgia realize their educational dreams through the Georgia Power Scholarship Program," said Garrett. "I'm pleased to be able to present scholarships to these outstanding students who will one day be our leaders. I also take pride in the fact that, through this program, we're taking care of members of the Georgia Power family."

The Georgia Power Scholarship Program was created by former Georgia Power and Southern Company President and CEO Bill Dahlberg. This year 22 scholarships were awarded, with 10 students receiving $3,500 and 12 students receiving $1,000.

The scholarship recipients were selected from among 175 students who competed in the program. Awards are based on academic achievement, leadership, character, integrity and school and community activities. To be considered for a scholarship, candidates had to submit an application and participate in a panel interview.

Carter is attending Georgia Southern University in Statesboro this fall where she plans to major in business.

Dettmering attends Athens Technical College where she is majoring in dental hygiene.
