May Day Celebration at Serenbe

The 2nd Annual May Day Celebration at Serenbe will be held Sunday, April 29 from 1-8 p.m. in the rolling hills of south Fulton. The event is the culmination of the week-long Earth Week at Serenbe. More than 20 vendors will be featured, including Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop, The Farmhouse Restaurant, Bella Cucina, Serenbe Organic Farms, Olive Boutique, Tiffany Mooring and EcoMeme along with local barbecue and kettle corn vendors and local artisans.

What has been called a mistake during a move to new a Fulton County Elections Division warehouse led to more than 30 boxes of voter registration applications cards and other documents ending up in a dumpster. An official with the elections division said the accidental disposal of approximately 75,000 previously processed voter-related documents should not pose a threat to theft of personal identity of the applicants. Meanwhile, a war of words appears to be erupting over the incident.

Arrests are pending in two March 1 pawn shop burglaries in Palmetto where 12 handguns were stolen. The recovery of one of the guns was instrumental in cracking the case.

The idea of having an annual music festival along the banks of the Chattahoochee River in south Fulton County was music to the ears of Fulton County Board of Commissioners. The project received a 7-0 vote at the April 3 commission meeting.

South bound lane closures on interstate 85 south of state route 34

Georgia Department of Transportation contractor, Archer Western, announces the southbound outside lane on Interstate 85, south of Ga. Highway 34, will be closed each day from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. from April 9-April 12, beginning at Mile Post 47 south to Mile Post 45. This closure is due to the widening and lane reconstruction project currently underway. Shoulders are also closed in this construction area and extreme caution needs to be observed.

Union City hopes tax district is successful

Union City Council has taken what it calls the next step in revitalizing the area around Union Station and Royal 85 Business Park, both located adjacent to I-85. Council members March 20 adopted a resolution to revise the Union City Town Center Redevelopment Plan and create a Tax Allocation District (TAD) in the two designated areas. The move awaits approval by the Fulton County Commission and Fulton County Board of Education.

The vote is in. Eighty percent of Fulton County voters March 20 said yes to a renewal of the school system’s one-percent sales tax that carries a $893 million ceiling. The one-percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) renewal is slated to bring eight new schools to south Fulton.

But this time, Dr. Robert Eger had updated figures indicating that the new city will be financially viable despite the annexations of large portions of the proposed city by existing south Fulton cities.

Water-sewer authority needs more $

Things may be getting questionable for the future of South Fulton Municipal Regional Water & Sewer Authority. Bonds totaling $42 million were sold in 2003 with the idea of constructing a reservoir and the infrastructure necessary to serve the drinking water needs of Union City, Fairburn and Palmetto. Today the project is still not off the ground and is need of another $13 million. In the meantime, residents of the three cities will watch this summer as the municipalities begin paying on the principal and interest, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

Shots fired at Trotter’s Farm in Fairburn

Two Morrow residents are in custody and others are being sought by Fairburn Police in a Sunday night shooting that resulted in two injuries after approximately 100 shots were fired into a home at 915 Fellowship Road. Nine people were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Music festival site gets approval by planning board

Anybody up for a music festival? Fulton County Community Zoning Board believed the idea would fly, voting March 21 to approve a permit request by Rivertown Entertainment, LLC to hold an annual music festival on a 2,047-acre site in south Fulton.
