Road work should b completed in 60 days

A new look is coming to a short stretch of the often congested area of Palmetto-Tyrone Road between Ga. Highway 74 and the railroad tracks at Senoia Road. Work has begun that will bring a wider roadway with turn lanes and a landscaped median.

The 75-foot right-of-way will accommodate two lanes of traffic and will add a westbound left turn lane onto Valleywood Road and the Eckerd’s property and an eastbound left turn lane into Sycamore Grove Office Park. The project also calls for the installation of a landscaped median along a portion of the roadway between Valleywood and the railroad tracks. And on the west side of the intersection at Hwy. 74, turn lanes will be installed on the north and southbound sides of Palmetto-Tyrone Road.

The widening project began last week with the clearing of trees and other plant material along both sides of the roadway, with crews currently working to install culverts. The project should be competed within the next 60 days, said Town Manager Barry Amos.

The road widening is one facet of the larger project by developer Brent Scarborough and South Tree Enterprises that brought Eckerd Drugs, Bank of Georgia and the initial phase of Sycamore Grove Office Park to Tyrone, Amos said. Dating back approximately five years, the development agreement specified that a certain amount of development could occur prior to widening the road. Now, Georgia Dept. of Transportation has signed off and the time to widen the road has come, Amos said.

“Traffic movement in this area needed to be addressed. The town required the developer to pay the cost of the work,” Amos said. “So it’s a nice addition with no cost to taxpayers.”
