Ask and you shall receive. The Tyrone Planning Commissioners Thursday night approved a request by Abundant Life Church of God to have a five-acre tract adjacent to the church rezoned OI (Office/Institutional).

Representing the church, Michael Faulkner said the rezoning would provide a way for the church to protect its existing five-acre property on Ga. Highway 74. Nearby property is currently zoned commercial and agricultural, he said.

Consultant Jonathan Lewis told the commission the proposal was consistent with the town’s plans for Hwy. 74, adding that trees present in the 60-foot buffer should be kept in place.

The motion carrying a 3-0 vote approval specified that the buffer with existing trees be preserved and that a shared driveway be used by the church and the rezoned tract.

Approval was also given for the revised site plan for Southcrest Bank, located on Carriage Oaks between Hwy. 74 and Chaps. The 9,400 square-foot commercial building will house approximately five retail businesses. The 3-0 vote came with the conditions that a proper traffic intersection configuration be installed on the building’s south side to maintain a smooth and unobstructed flow of traffic and that a retaining wall be constructed, also on the south side of the building, between the Southcrest property and the newly opened Waffle House.

Also at the meeting, consideration of the site plan for commercial buildings on property along Tyrone-Palmetto Road owned by Burt Clark was withdrawn by the applicant.
