An Oct. 27 conference at Georgia International Conference Center in College Park provided a look at a proposed international trade and tourism venue called the African Village Project, to be located on a handful of sites across unincorporated south Fulton County.

Bear Creek becomes NASA school

Please join Bear Creek Middle School as we kick-off our NASA Explorer School Program. Bear Creek was selected as one of 25 schools in the nation to participate in this exciting partnership. During the partnership, Bear Creek will work with NASA personnel and other partners to develop and implement programs in mathematics, science and technology education. Schools Combine Forces for Common Goal

More than 200 racers, organizers and spectators showed up for the first annual Great Pumpkin Race, a joint effort organized by Flat Rock Middle School and Sandy Creek High School, held recently on the cross country course at Sandy Creek. Teachers, administrators, students and parents from the sister schools joined forces in an effort to raise money for technology services at both schools. As a result, more than $2000 was raised by the 1-mile walk and 5k walk/run that took place on Saturday, October 13. All race participants received a t-shirt and awards were given to the top three male and female winners of each age group in the 5k run.

The Landmark Christian School K4 students enjoyed the beautiful fall weather recently as they walked to the Fairburn Fire Dept to highlight their study of Community Helpers. While at the station, firefighters gave the students a tour of the firehouse, showed them the big ladder trucks and how they operate, and allowed them to sit in a fire truck. Candidates speak out in Fairburn

Fairburn first candidate’s forum in recent memory was held Oct. 21 at Southside Theater. Sponsored by Fairburn Business Association, the event gave the 50 residents present an overview of what candidates knew about some of the current issues facing the city and what plans they had to address them.

Union City turns down Adams Homes

Try as they might, Adams Homes cannot get approval of a project to construct single-family homes in the duplex community of Red Oak Walk near Christian City. The Union City Council voted unanimously Oct. 16 to deny the request.

Fairburn passes $23 million budget

Fairburn’s fiscal year began Oct. 1 and along with it came the adoption of the city’s $23.8 million budget.

Projected General Fund revenues totaling $8.148 million are a 9.4 percent increase over the previous year, and include $2.5 million in property taxes, $1.45 million in local option sales tax, $140,000 in motor vehicle tax, $233,000 in franchise tax, $350,000 in business and occupation taxes, $325,000 in insurance premiums, $1.9 million in non-tax revenues such as development and landfill tipping fees, $450,000 in other taxes such as alcohol, insurance and real estate and $725,000 in interfund transfers.

Palmetto’s assistant police chief is buried

Palmetto lost a long-time public safety official Oct. 23 with the passing of Assistant Police Chief Fred Waddell.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Waddell’s law enforcement career spanned 35 years, with more than 20 years in service in Palmetto.

Union City approves road work

The 2006 bond issue designed to upgrade some of Union City’s roadways received two more approvals Oct. 16, with the city council approving $346,407 in project expenditures.

Another auto parts store may be on the horizon for Tyrone. The Planning Commission Oct. 25 voted 2-1 to recommend a reduced setback for the proposed O’Reilly Auto Parts store on Tyrone Road east of Ga. Highway 74.

It was not development and density. It was not sewer. The main campaign issue in Tyrone’s upcoming municipal elections nearly morphed into a non-issue issue Monday night as candidates for mayor and council posts 1 and 2 responded to the many questions posed to them. The main campaign issue is town manager Barry Amos.

Chatt Hills candidates make their plea

It is always significant when a large number of citizens turn out for a political forum. It is even more significant when 15 percent of the registered voters show up to hear candidates’ positions. That was the case Oct. 13 when more than 200 witnessed a piece of history at Chattahoochee Hill Country’s first candidates forum. Conducted at Foxhall Farms in Douglas County, the forum provided a large-scale public venue for the new city’s 19 candidates.

After months of debate, car wash owner gets his sign

Ken Lawhorn left Tyrone’s Town Council meeting Thursday night a happy man.

For months, Lawson has been working his way through Tyrone’s government to try and get a sign for his car detailing business. Lawson’s business, Reflections Hand Car Wash and Detailing, is located on Ga. Highway 74, next to Advance Auto Parts. Since his business does not have a curb cut on the busy state highway, Lawson was unable to place a sign in the town’s 60 ft. buffer that runs the length of the highway.

More development headed for South Fulton Parkway

Union City’s next development is on the horizon on property annexed along South Fulton Parkway last year. The mainly residential development will feature single-family homes, 153 townhomes and 292 rent-structured apartments, with some of those being the Section 8 apartments strenuously objected to last year when the proposal first surfaced. The development is located just east of the Parkway Village commercial center located on the northeast corner of the parkway and Ga. Highway 92.

Trickum Creek cemetery issue may be subject of a lawsuit

The controversy surrounding the possible disturbance of graves on Trickum Creek Road in Tyrone may be headed to court.
