Ken Lawhorn left Tyrone’s Town Council meeting Thursday night a happy man.

For months, Lawson has been working his way through Tyrone’s government to try and get a sign for his car detailing business. Lawson’s business, Reflections Hand Car Wash and Detailing, is located on Ga. Highway 74, next to Advance Auto Parts. Since his business does not have a curb cut on the busy state highway, Lawson was unable to place a sign in the town’s 60 ft. buffer that runs the length of the highway.

“I like the people and they like my business. I just need to have a sign so people know I’m here,” he said.

The Planning Commission had recommended giving Lawson a variance of 30 feet in the buffer, but Lawson said that would not look uniform, and urged the Town Council to let him line up his sign with the Advanced Auto Parts sign.

The Council agreed with Lawson, and voted 3-1 to allow him to place a sign in the buffer. Councilman Grace Caldwell voted against the measure and said she preferred following the existing sign ordinance.
