Ashley, 70, Brooks, died Jan. 16, 2010. He was born Dec. 29, 1939 in Sharpsburg, son of the late Ralph and Estelle Ashley. He enjoyed working on his land and spending time with his family. He started a successful wire rope and sling business over 50 years ago. He also started an insurance company and loved to work. Phyllis Dale HammelPhyllis Dale "Granny" Hammel, 70, Fayetteville, died Jan. 16, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry William Hammel Sr. She loved to travel and spend time with her family. She worked at the Base Exchange at Ft. Gillem for over 23 years. Following her retirement she was a volunteer at the Fayette Thrift Store. Peggy Alice CochranPeggy Alice Cochran, 83, Fayetteville, died Jan. 17, 2010. Lillie Mae Echols ThomasLillie Mae Echols Thomas , Newnan, died Jan. 3, 2010. She was born April 20, 1931in Heard County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Doc and Lillie Echols, her husband, Van Buren Thomas, two sisters and two brothers. She served as a loving church Mother, prayer and Bible Band teacher. Lessie Mae LovelaceLessie Mae Lovelace, Newnan, died Jan. 5, 2010. She was born April 18, 1923 in Newnan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Geneva Lovelace and was the second oldest of eight siblings. She was educated in the Coweta County school system and finished high school in Moreland. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Vella Mae BenefieldVella Mae Benefield, 89, Sharpsburg, formerly of College Park and Thomaston, died Jan. 2, 2010. She and her husband were gospel singers and she often accompanied them on the guitar and the autoharp. She was known for her generosity and for never saying an unkind word. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Dusty Washington officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. John Veazey Wynne Jr.John Veazey Wynne Jr., 92, Crawfordville, died Jan. 4. 2010. He was born Nov. 20, 1917, and was a lifelong resident of Taliaferro County and a 1935 graduate of Alexander Stephens Institute. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of Georgia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Allyene Long Wynne, and his parents, John Veazey and Mary Lizzie Sturdivant Wynne. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Brenda Kay Tyree SmithBrenda Kay Tyree Smith, 56, Fayetteville, died Jan. 4, 2010. She was a 1971 graduate of Fayette County High School and had worked for the Federal government for 25 years. Services were at the Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Warren Huddleston officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. William Watson SmithWilliam Watson Smith, 70, Senoia, died Jan. 6, 2010. He loved to garden, fish, and spend time on Lake Sinclair. He was a 35-year salesman with Edison Brothers Stores. Memorial services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. D. Porter officiating. Jimmie Hazelle GaglianoJimmie Hazelle Gagliano, 89, Peachtree City, formerly of Chattanooga, died Jan. 7, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Gagliano, her parents, Lester and Alda Kate Holt High, and brother, Robert King High. She was member of the Fellowship Sunday School class at Peachtree City First Baptist Church. She was retired from the Chattanooga Times with 24 years of service. Services were at the East Ridge Baptist Church, Chattanooga, with the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Mitchell officiating. Interment was at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Alice F. NewcomerAlice F. Newcomer, 68, Fayetteville, died Jan. 7, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. "Buddy" Newcomer, and her parents, C.B. and Thelma Morgan. She loved life to the fullest. Gloria Bohannon WallaceGloria "Deanie" Bohannon Wallace, formerly of Newnan, died Dec. 27, 2009. She was born June 10, 1947 in Newnan, in the "Historic Rocky Hill" community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Deacon Willie "Frisk" and Sarah F. Bohannon Sr., three brothers and two nephews. She was educated at Central High School where she played the clarinet in the concert and marching bands. After high school she began at Savannah State College and at Clark College. She graduated with a Bachelor or Arts degree from Jersey City State College. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. Gerald Lee ClevelandGerald Lee Cleveland, Union City, died Jan. 1, 2010. He was born Feb. 10, 1950 in Moreland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Ed and Dorothy Reese Bussie, Moreland. He attended schools in Coweta County and was a 1968 graduate of Central High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Clark Chapel Church in Luthersville. William Ross ElliottWilliam Ross Elliott, 23, Sharpsburg, died Jan.. 4, 2010 of complications of pulmonary illness. He was a 2005 graduate of Northgate High School. He enjoyed outdoor adventure and loved hiking, marine life, photography and a fine cigar. Memorial services will be this Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ed Deabler officiating. Anna Bigan WorgoAnna Bigan Worgo, 96, Fayetteville, died Dec. 25, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew T. Worgo, two brothers, and one sister. June Marlene Jeffords BowenJune Marlene Jeffords Bowen, 70, Fayetteville, formerly of Gainesville, Fla., died Dec. 28, 2009, following a long period of disability. She enjoyed successful and rewarding careers with the Florida Farm Bureau Ins. Co., and later as a department head with Griffin Federal Bank Mortgage Inc., in Fayetteville. Thomas J. Lynch Jr.Thomas "Tom" J. Lynch Jr., 76, Fayetteville, died Dec. 30, 2009. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Derrick Lovelady officiating. Survivors include a son, Jim Peebles, Lake Sinclair; a daughter, Pat Fulkerson, Milner; grandchildren, Donny Fulkerson, Laurie Ricks, and Jeffrey Peebles; and great-grandchildren, Justin Peebles, Taylor Ricks, Brittany Lynn Fulkerson, Ashley Fulkerson, and Joshua Fulkerson. He served for 10 years in the United States Air Force and then worked as an aircraft mechanic for 23 years with Eastern Air Lines. He then worked for 8 years at Lockheed. He loved to garden, sharing the fruits of his labors with friends and family. He was also an avid fisherman. The body was cremated. Denise BlackburnDenise Blackburn, 51, Senoia, died Dec.. 20, 2009. During the last year of her life, she cared for and counseled other cancer patients at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. Robert G. Long Sr.Robert “Bob” G. Long Sr., 72, died Dec. 13, 2009. He grew up in Buffalo, N. Y. He served in the United States Air Force at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, where he met his wife at a skating rink. Helen Louise HussieHelen Louise Hussie, Newnan, died Dec. 4, 2009. She was born Aug. 15, 1923 in Newnan, daughter of the late Joe and Eloise Barker Hussie. Hugh W. WeaverHugh W. Weaver, Fayetteville, died Dec. 19, 2009. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Qualia Weaver. He was born March 8, 1932 in Dublin, Ga. He attended Marion Military Institute and later graduated from Florida State University. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He worked for Eastern Airlines until 1990. He was a charter member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Tyrone. A funeral mass was held at St. Matthew Catholic Church. John Gordon Alford Jr.Dr. John Gordon Alford Jr., 79, Peachtree City, died Dec. 20, 2009 from respiratory failure. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He received his master’s in education from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. from Harvard. He worked in various educational administrative roles for the State of Illinois for over 30 years, retiring to Tallahassee in 1988. He later served with the Peace Corps in Pakistan. He enjoyed Kiwanis and volunteering with other civic and charitable organizations. Elizabeth NelmsElizabeth Nelms, 89, Fayetteville, died Dec. 20, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Harrison Nelms, a son, William Horace “Billy” Nelms, and a grandson, William Allen Nelms. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev.
