The U2charist service held at Providence United Methodist Church on Jan. 30 raised $1,550 for Heifer International and UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. The service, featuring the band from Providence’s contemporary worship service, included nine U2 songs, scripture readings, videos and holy communion. The service also included a video on Heifer International, an organization that helps communities become self-supporting through the gifts of livestock. Recipients are trained in the raising of livestock and educated on the use and sale of by-products. The service was attended by 480 people, including many avid U2 fans. Band leader Adam Holt said, “Because many of the songs have spiritual foundations, we’ve used them in worship services and our church family enjoys hearing them. U2charist was a great blend of popular contemporary music, Bible readings and raising money for good causes.” The service included video of U2 band leader Bono explaining why he feels called by God to help the less fortunate. The Providence band plays during the 10 a.m. contemporary worship service each Sunday. Providence is at 592 Bernhard Rd. in southern Fayette County between Redwine Road and Ga. Highway 85.
