A Brooks resident who was in a serious car crash Dec. 23 remains in a coma at The Shepherd Center, but the community is rallying with prayers and financial support, a family friend has told The Citizen.

Candice Smith, 19, was flown to Grady Hospital immediately after the crash on Ga. Highway 16 near Huckabee Road. After two weeks, she was transferred to Shepherd, which focuses on the treatment of spinal cord and brain injuries.

Family friends have reported signs of progress in Candice’s recovery and they are asking for continued prayers for her healing. They also are spearheading a campaign to create paper butterflies that will be hung around her room to brighten her spirits when she wakes up.

Friends are also being asked to paint their toenails dark red, the same as Candice’s, to help remind them to pray for her daily.

An account to help the family with mounting medical bills has been set up at SunTrust Bank. The account is in the name of Candice Smith c/o Liz Taylor.

Candice is the daughter of Marion Smith, the horticultural teacher at Fayette County High School and Chandra Smith, a Realtor with Prudential Georgia Realty in Fayetteville. Candice’s brother Jason is a student at Whitewater High School.
