Tyrone will have a new town manager beginning in early January. The Town Council Dec. 8 approved the hire of Glynn County Community Development Department grant coordinator Richard Newbern for the position.

Expected to begin his job duties on Jan. 4, Newbern has served as the grant coordinator for Glynn’s community development department since October 1998. During that time Newbern prepared and administered state and federal grant applications and assisted with the development and implementation of budget strategies for local government projects.

Newbern just prior to becoming the grants coordinator served in the development department as a planner. He also served for two years as county manager in Appling County and for three years as city manager in Camilla.

Newbern will succeed Chris Venice, whose resignation is effective at the end of December.
