Fungus is plaguing air traffic controllers

Passengers and crews of commercial aircraft flying high in the skies over a large portion of the southeastern United States are kept safe by air traffic controllers at the Atlanta Air Route Traffic Control Center in Hampton. But the safety of those keeping the public safe is being compromised. A majority of those employed at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facility in Hampton have experienced one or more symptoms and illnesses that have plagued the control room for years. Many air traffic controllers believe the cause of so much illness is a fungus called Scopulariopsis and many of the Hampton staff live in Fayette County.

New this year, The Citizen is devoting a special section of its website where candidates in Fayette, Coweta and south Fulton counties can blog about issues in the election. In turn, this allows voters a chance to interact online with the candidates.

New map set for committee discussion Thursday

It’s starting to get down to crunch time for the committee redrawing the county’s elementary school lines.

Last week, committee members toured Cleveland Elementary an East Fayette Elementary schools to get a hands-on view of one of the newest schools and the oldest schools in the county.

Nearly all on the Fayetteville Planning & Zoning Commission said they appreciated the planning that went into The Homestead, a 58-acre proposed residential development at the northwest corner of Beauregard Boulevard and Ramah Road. But when the vote was cast at the board’s Sept. 25 regular session, commissioners cited concerns over density as the reason to deny a request to rezone the property from R-30 to R-22 PUD (Planned Unit Development).

Fairburn council members Sept. 24 agreed to initiate a $10 million project that will construct a downtown college campus designed to house Georgia Military College (GMC) and possibly other satellite campuses from area colleges and universities. Plans call for GMC into move to the Fairburn-owned facility in October 2008.

It is that time of year again. And it is going to start early. Festivities for the annual Old Campbell County Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 6, taking the theme “From the Old to the New,” the event will provide a little something for everyone in the family.

Newspaper, business association set forum

The Citizen Newspapers and the Tyrone Business Association (TBA) have joined forces to jointly sponsor the “Tyrone Candidate’s Forum.” The forum is open to the public and is October 15 at the Legacy Theater in Tyrone from 7 to 9 PM.

County may change noise ordinance

The Fayette County Commission may consider amending its noise ordinance to allow a resident’s request for his children to ride dirt bikes on a track they built on their property.

Flu shots available Oct. 1

Fulton County Dept. of Health and Wellness will begin offering flu shots Oct. 1 at its 12 health centers. Residents will be able to obtain the flu shot at a cost of $25. The department has ordered 14,000 doses of the vaccine and strongly encourages individuals who fall within a high-risk group to get the shot.

Sandy Creek volleyball goes undefeated at tournament

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots came out number one in the Collins Hill Classic this past weekend. The team of three seniors and six juniors went undefeated over the course of the tournament and finished with a perfect record of 14-0 and held many of the teams to ten points or less. They defeated Alcovy (25-4, 25-6), Ola (25-13, 25-8), Northgate (25-14, 25-21), Houston County (25-14, 25-10), Dutchtown (25-9, 25-14), Athens Academy (25-11, 25-8). In the championship game, Sandy Creek defeated Norcross (25-18, 25-18).

Outdoor watering banned by state
