College campus coming to Fairburn

College camps coming to Fairburn

It was far from an average decision by a City Council. Fairburn council members Sept. 24 agreed to initiate a $10 million project that will construct a downtown college campus designed to house Georgia Military College (GMC) and possibly other satellite campuses from area colleges and universities. Plans call for GMC into move to the Fairburn-owned facility in October 2008.

City administrator Jim Williams said discussions with GMC officials over their plans to relocate the campus from its current location in Union City had culminated in a plan for GMC to lease classroom and administrative space from Fairburn after the city builds a college campus on West Broad Street. That announcement was followed by a discussion that led to a decision by the council to approve the concept and the first phase of the campus project.

The four-acre campus will be located on the site of the old Dodson Lawn & Farm Equipment business and will eventually consist of four 18,400 square-foot brick classroom buildings, an 11,400 square-foot administrative building and two 2,000 square-foot retail buildings.

“The idea was to come up with something to fit with the historic downtown area and to get the historic atmosphere going,” Williams said of the classic architectural detail featured in the classroom buildings. “And it blends in with GMC’s Milledgeville campus. GMC was totally in awe of the project.”

The initial undertaking will be construction of phase 1, which will include the first two classroom buildings along West Broad and two retail sandwich and coffee shops to be located between them. Also included is the three-story, colonial-style administration building that will be centered in the rear of the property and patterned after the old Campbell County Courthouse. Future phases will include construction of two additional classroom buildings to be located on either side of the administration building at the rear of the campus. Phase 1 will be completed by October 2008.

GMC indicated its desire to move into one of the classroom buildings in October 2008 and to utilize a portion of the administration building, Williams said. Continuing conversations with other colleges and universities could result in a lease of the second classroom building, he said.

The council is considering two sources of financing for the city-owned campus. Fairburn would use $5 million of the $12 million it currently holds in reserve to finance half of the approximately $10 million needed for Phase 1. The balance needed for phase 1, expected to be between $4-5 million, could be borrowed, Williams said. The 10-year lease by GMC for its portion of the space would pay for a significant portion of the financed amount, he said. The lease of the second classroom building in phase 1 would make up the difference, Williams added. The initial $10 million cost will also provide for the necessary site preparation work across the entire property. Phase 2 buildings would not be constructed until the city gets a firm commitment from interested educational institutions.

Also needed will be parking space for 200 vehicles. Discussions to obtain that property are in process. Another facet of the transportation involves MARTA. With a bus stop already positioned at the front entrance of the campus, Williams said he hopes the city will be able to work with MARTA to establish express bus service to facilitate larger numbers of students.

I saw on channel 11 news today that an Atlanta-area four-year college is moving to downtown Newnan. Did anyone else see this?
Hmmm.... Wonder which college it is? Eye-wink

It was in the Newnan paper Sat. http://times-herald.com/

Evidently, the mayor gave a K-club talk & teased. The WGa place has been over there for years & that Baptist college is over in the trade school building. They had 4 graduates recently.

Makes you wonder if Clayton jumped over PTC.

I was told it's The University Of West Georgia. They have plans to expand their campus in Newnan.

Glad to hear you're doing good. Prayers are answered!

God Bless

I've heard different but am not yet at liberty to say much by way of detail. I was "fishing" with my post to see if anyone in the community has gotten wind of the rumors. Smiling

Good to see you.

Scroll through the blogs to the "No Responce" blog eonndaj1(ok I'm spelling this wrong) has been asking about you and looking for you. I told her I thought you were in England. She is worried about you.

Denise has been keeping our minds busy with informative posts, she reminds me of you. She challenges us to think.

I have been out of the office and just returned and see your posts. How very very good to hear from you, I had become concerned. . .and I guess with good reason. Seems people cross my mind and prayers just when it's needed most (kind of a sixth sense thing I have). I'm so very sorry to hear that Mrs. Muddle has been ill; you've really had a lot to deal with lately. Just want you to know that there are those of us you'll never know that are thinking about you and the Mrs. and praying for you.

I would have spent the earlier part of September in England, where I was to read a paper at a conference in Oxford. All travel plans were cancelled, however, due to the illness mentioned in my other post. Not to put too fine a point on it, I nearly lost Mrs. Muddle over the past few weeks.

but glad that your wife is doing better. Is she well, or at least on the road to recovery? Hope you can take care of yourself. Going through what you've been through is so draining. I'll pray for you and your wife. Smiling

And thanks to everyone else.

She is showing good signs of recovery, I think. It's nice for us both to be home after literally and exactly one month in hospitals (all but two of those nights sleeping in a chair for me). She began at Fayette Piedmont and then went to Emory for over three weeks.

I hope you are through the worst part. I know many people here are and will pray for you.

We were getting a little concerned about your absence. Everything OK?

Thanks for asking.

We've just come through a very serious--nearly terminal, in fact-- and lengthy illness in our family involving a month-long hospital stay.

There is now reason to be cautiously optimistic. There is also some reason to believe that God really does answer prayer.

I thought you had just grown tired of us. I wish that had been the reason for your absence. God Bless and please know that you have prayers comming from far and wide. Give Mrs. Muddle as strong a hug as she can tolerate, and let her know it is from your on line family. Cheers,

Kevin "Hack" King
