Donors needed ASAP to replenish blood supply

The American Red Cross has issued an urgent call for blood donors as blood supply throughout the Southeast has dipped to critical levels in the past week.

The agenda at Fayetteville Planning & Zoning meetings, like those in other area municipalities, has been largely dormant in past months due to the effects of the recession. The Fayette County Commission is expected Thursday to approve putting a one percent sales tax on the Nov. 3 ballot for voter consideration.

Peachtree City, Tyrone and Fayetteville have each approved an agreement that is expected to lead to voters considering a new 1 percent sales tax for Fayette County.

New school zones to help walkers

Peachtree City police will conduct “educational” enforcement of school safety zones for the first part of the school year, officials said.

An alleged sexual relationship between 11-year Newnan Police Officer Todd Lengsfeld and a 15 year-old female led to his arrest Tuesday by Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents on molestation charges and subsequently to his termination from the department for policy violations.

It will have the look of a bygone era, one that continues to embrace the increasing unique development in Senoia. The city council Aug. 3 approved the use of gas lights for the upcoming Gin Property development.

The long wait for the construction of what will become Senoia’s new $1.3 million police department/municipal court building near the ball fields on Howard Road is coming to an end. The council Monday voted to approve a $1,049,000 low bid by Triad Construction for the construction of the 8,310 square-foot building.

Fairburn Planning Commission voted Tuesday to deny the conceptual site plan from TreatMed, Inc. that would establish a biomedical waste treatment plant on 4.22 acres along Creekwood Road. The issue will go before the City Council at its Aug. 10 meeting.

Angela Brown, Teacher of the Year Coweta County 2009, was the guest speaker for the Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club.  Angela was selected as “Top Teacher” from among the Teachers of the Year from each of Coweta County’s 30 public schools.  Brown is a 5th grade teacher at Ruth Hill Elementary School in Coweta.

In partnership with the Peachtree City Police Department and the department’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), The Cathedral of Christ the King in Sharpsburg invites the community to attend a free 90 minute seminar on disaster preparedness.  The seminar will held on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. 

With children returning to school over the next few weeks, the Georgia State Patrol is reminding drivers to be alert when traveling in school zones and near school bus stops. Colonel Bill Hitchens, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, said Georgia State Troopers regularly patrol school zones as part of their normal duties and they will be keeping a close watch for school zone violations. He said troopers will also be watching for people who fail to stop for a school bus that is stopped to load or unload passengers.

County ranks 12th worst in socking away reserve funds for bad times — like now

While Fayette County residents boast of their school system’s high state ranking on student performance tests, most may not know of a crucial measure in which the local system ranks near the bottom in Georgia: rainy day reserve funds.

“We’re not going anywhere. There’s no way.” That was the position of Bank of Georgia President Pat Shepherd Monday in response to a “cease and desist” order from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) issued June 30.

Of the proposed projects for a new special purpose local option sales tax, by far the costliest is $55 million to pay off debt for the county’s Justice Center.

Seven Peachtree City businesses were cited by police for alcohol violations after an undercover sting last week.

She’s Bistro, Gezzo’s Surf and Grill, Grinds and Wines, Chili’s, Kane Yama and Peachtree Bottle Shop were cited for furnishing alcohol to a person under 21, police said. Gezzo’s was also charged with selling alcohol without a permit and allowing an employee to serve alcohol without a permit, police said.
