Millage rate to stay same, but revenue going up 2.56 percent

While Peachtree City isn’t raising its millage rate, it will stay the same thus effecting a property tax increase on all reassessed properties.

A Peachtree City resident is advocating the creation of a task force to help the city improve its budgeting process ... and save money along the way.

Randy L. Gaddo, Peachtree City's Director of Leisure Services, spoke to Rotary Club members at a recent luncheon. He described the services that are currently provided under his leadership. In 1997, Gaddo assumed this position as the City's first director of Leisure Services, which at that time was a newly formed city division that centralized areas including the parks and recreation department, and all library services. Previously these entities were under the Public Services Division.

Peachtree City Police are reporting that a woman reported missing earlier this morning has been found and has returned home. Using the reverse 911 system, authorities had asked for public assistance in locating a 26 year-old woman.

Coweta Sheriff’s Office is still looking a man that attempted a robbery at a bank in the Thomas Crossroads area early Monday afternoon. Maj. James Yarbrough is asking that anyone with information contact the Sheriff’s office.

Coweta County commission is scheduled to set the 2008 millage rate Friday at 1:30 p.m. following a public hearing on the matter. The proposed millage rates for incorporated and unincorporated areas are going down and would include no net tax increase.

The city of Senoia is getting ready to decide on the future site of its new police station.

During Monday’s City Council meeting, city administrator Richard Ferry was explaining the city’s short term work program. The city has held several executive sessions concerning real estate, and Ferry said the city may be ready to close on the parcel in August. The city has spent $4,000 on the plan for the station, and is estimating the land will cost $215,000. The station would be built in 2009 and 2010 and run the city $1.3 million in construction costs. The station will be funded through a combination of impact fees, Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax funds and general obligation debt.

The Fayette County Board of Education (FCBOE) is exploring the possibility of asking voters to approve a one percent ESPLOST (Education Special Local Option Sales Tax) in November to help the school system maintain its current level of education while lowering property taxes, school board officials said Thursday. A public input meeting on the issue will be held July 31.

The Fayette County Board of Education is searching for a way to offset the economic downturn, state austerity cuts and rising fuel prices while addressing needs in areas such as technology, debt service, facility upgrades and transportation. Their idea is a 1-percent local option sales tax.

A letter obtained by The Citizen from Fayette County’s Permits and Inspections Department indicates the department may be more concerned about developers than whether swimming pool fences are built according to state-mandated standards.

Parental responsibility continues to be in the forefront of Fayetteville’s efforts to stem juvenile activities that can run afoul of the law.
