2 girls hurt in golf cart hit-and-run

Two girls received minor injuries late Sunday afternoon when their golf cart was struck by another golf cart, causing it to strike a tree, Peachtree City police said.

The other golf cart left the scene before officers arrived, and did not stop to give aid to the victims or provide information, police said.

The crash occurred at 6:30 p.m. on the path in the area of the Sagamore subdivision and Ga. Highway 74, police said. The driver of the wrecked cart, Caitlin Dillon, told police that the other golf cart had been following closely behind her cart prior to the crash, police said.

The crash occurred on a curve in the path as the driver of the tailing golf cart attempted to pass Dillon’s cart, police said.
The front of the unknown cart struck the rear of Dillon’s cart, causing it to veer off the path and hit a tree, police said.

Prior to the crash, a passenger on Dillon’s cart was struck in the head by a lollipop that was thrown from the other cart, police said.

The golf cart that left the scene was described as a red golf cart with a white top with no pull-down sides, police said. The victims were unable to get the cart’s decal number, police said.

The driver was described as a white male between 13 and 14 years old with blond hair wearing a white polo shirt, police said. There were also two other people on that cart, which headed back through the tunnel under Hwy. 74 toward Kedron Elementary after the crash, police said.

The victims had bruises to their shins but declined medical treatment, police said. The damage to Dillon’s cart was estimated to be about $1,000.

Prior to the accident the victims had been shopping at the Kedron Village shopping center, police said.

Where have you been? I know reading that Larry Elders book.
Honestly I think Elders would make a better President than Obama.

I think I am in trouble with that one.

I have to get use to my school scheldue. I have to go back soon. Plus my other job. I want my summer back and I don't know where it went.

Have a good night. Great to see you on.

Now, I read something on here that Larry Elders is black. I have his new book, wow I never noticed.Eye-wink I didn't even notice the title. It doesn't matter anyway. Why I think he is almost up on my list with Hannity and Beck.

If more people would read Larry Elder's book maybe they might just understand the issues on both sides. This guy knows what he is talking about. He even backs it up. I am glad you told me about his book.

Thanks again.

Larry Elder has articles in this paper every once in a while. He has basically the same message as Bill Cosby. Most people don't want to hear the truth.

Larry has a new book out? What is the title?

I don't think there are any easy answers.

Have a good night.

Um, I am sorry about your cart. But, maybe, just maybe you should SLOW DOWN when someone is passing you. Or PULL OVER when someone is tailgating and clearly wants to pass. It would probably have saved your cart and your shins.

The solution is pretty simple: PTC citizens should arm themselves.

These Dum Dum throwing criminal types would think twice if they thought that their victims might be packing their own Dum Dums to hurl back.

Remember: If Dum Dums are outlawed, only outlaws will have Dum Dums.

Submitted by Bonkers on Tue, 07/22/2008 - 2:00pm.

I prefer the "hollow-point" dum dums, myself.

They practically explode upon impact, rather than just spread out some.

If these carts went around town slinging these things at people, I'll just bet some of this reckless driving and robbery, and graffiti would cease!

I ordered mine!

What would a war be like if neither side had any dum-dums? Wouldn't be much of a war.

Wow. I just wanted to try to identify this kid so that he wouldn't hurt some worse next time. I know a little boy whose mom died in a golf cart accident. No fault; no teenagers involved - just an accident. Maybe the driver I'm seeking doesn't understand that a golf cart is a vehicle that can kill and not a bumper car. Or maybe he does and didn't care. I don't know.

If you read all of my posts, you'll see where Caitlin took the path through the Aquatic Center/Kedron parking lot so that the kids following her could take the multi-purpose/golf cart path up to Kedron Dr. She did not expect them to follow her through the parking lot and then through the tunnel - she was just continuing on her way home to Tyrone. She did not expect them to throw anything at her and her sister and then to slam them into a tree once stopped.

I understand that this kid may have a different version of the events. If so, why doesn't he identify himself and tell his side of the story? He had at least two passengers. Why aren't the three of them and their parents telling their side(s)? Why didn't they wait for the police to arrive instead of turning around and retreating once they realized Robin had fallen off the cart and been hurt? The police could then decide if this was a case of hit and run/assault with a deadly weapon or if both parties were guilty of poor judgment. Again, look at the pictures and decide - even if someone should SLOW DOWN or PULL OVER but doesn't, do they deserve to have their golf cart totalled and have their lives put at risk because a teenager "couldn't pass" (although, this one could have taken the path instead of the parking lot route or passed in the parking lot)? What if a little kid had been rounding the corner on a bike on the other side of the tunnel and been hit?

Caitlin's dad has given her lots of "could have/should have" scenarios, like getting a decal #, returning to a more populated area, etc. However, I still don't see anything that justifies this kind of attack.

Submitted by Sick of Fascists on Tue, 07/22/2008 - 7:42pm.

You are right, I had not read your posts when I posted that. I apologize. The Munford article gives a completely different account, and does not mention the parking lot detour.
However, as you say, "What if a little kid had been rounding the corner on a bike on the other side of the tunnel and been hit?"
This is why, if someone is tailing you dangerously, you must PULL OVER and STOP. I doubt these girls were afraid of the teens on the other cart. Clearly, they could have stopped in the parking lot, (after calling 911, loudly). Racing on endangers you and others. That is and was my point.

Submitted by MYTMITE on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 11:35pm.

Evidently, people aren't reading your postings thoroughly. If you will look at my other post, I stated that there was no reason to continue to follow them after they diverted from the original path. That they continued to follow only indicates to me that they were up to no good. What was the reason for throwing anything? And why ram them? Some people need to rethink their posts.

Being out of town, and reading about this, made us appreciate PTC a little more.

How refreshing to read about "the lollipop caper" instead of armed robbery in our little town. I hope the kids who were injured are okay, however, when I told my own kids about how a "blue Dum-Dum lollipop" was involved in a hit and run, they laughed and spit our their Cheerios.

PTC is still a great place to call home...

I'm also tired of these reckless drivers on the MULTI-USE path system. These "drivers" come in all shapes and sizes, from kids under age, to golfers, to teenagers in another world. The biggest problem is nobody YIELDS when passing, it is always pedal to floor 100% of the time. Cmon people and parents have some common sense. I often take my 6yr old out to ride our BICYCLES, imagine that, people ride BICYCLES. It is nerve racking to say the least. I have to ride in front all the time, just to be sure she isnt creamed by ANY driver who refuses to let off the gas. If your driving up to me and you show no sign of slowing I"m going to ride in your path till you have to slow or stop, then I'm going to tell you thanks for slowing down as you pass. It is really sad to say that it isn't enjoyable to ride on the MULTI-USE PATH SYSTEM.

Get my point? It isnt a GOLF CAR PATH! It may be refered to it that way, but it isn't.

I own a Golf cart, I use it almost everyday, and I use it with common sense, I YIELD TO OTHERS!!!

It is time for anyone who is bothered by this, to put pressure on our city officials. The Chief of police, the city manager, and the city council. Email or call them today!

While I'm on the rant, how about people stop making new paths by again, refusing to YIELD, and driving off the side, many times ruining peoples yards? Can you not slow down and pass ON THE PAVEMENT?

I know that most kids do not read the paper or online news, but you parents need to wake up, and if yor an adult driving a cart, think about my thoughts next time you pass someone at 20mph. Please, just slow down.

Submitted by Spyglass on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 9:10pm.

I don't have too much to complain about regarding the paths. I've been here over 4 years and never had any troubles at all. I'm on them almost everyday.

But I agree, common courtesy goes a LONG way.

Submitted by loveptc on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 8:51pm.

By law, a golf cart is suppose to make a noise when they come up behind you to pass. How often does this happen? Never! I have complained before on this site about teenagers and their attitude toward walkers and bikers on the paths. Walking around Lake Peachtree with my dog is at some times scary, and it's not just the teenage drivers.

Actullay PTC Munciple Code 78-96 states:

A warning or announcement shall be given by operators of golf carts and other users of the recreation paths, such as bicyclists and skaters, when approaching pedestrians from the rear. This warning or announcement may be verbal, but it is recommended that bicyclists and golf cart operators equip their vehicles with a warning device such as a horn or bell.

Let me first say that I am a frequent carter, bike rider, and runner. So I can see all sides of this need to warn others when you are approaching from behind in a cart. However, I have found that the obnoxiously loud horn on my cart tends to scare walkers and runners more so than warn them of my impending approach. I usually get dirty looks looks and comments when I use the horn(as instructed). It tends to be taken the wrong way. As a runner, I try to keep my radio volume down and frequently glance back so as to avoid being surprised by a passing cart. I suggest others do the same, or at least not get ticked when you hear the horn blow.

I ride the streets too my friend. I was hit by a car on the Parkway back in January. You really think it would be safe to bring my 6 yr old out on the streets, no, of course you dont. My point about bikes was that very few people get on a bike and ride in comparison to the number of golf carts. That in it self is a shame. I'm not going to change the world, but you can bet I will expect common courtesy while on the paths.

I hear you, but you are ranting to the wind.

The parents don't care, they are just glad the kids aren't home for them to deal with. They don't care where they are.

The city officials don't care either. That is why they cut our cops pay and benefits and voted to give themselves a big fat raise.(that only Doug and Don deserve)

The cops are short by at least 8 last I heard because of the low pay and benefits.

The more accidents we have on the paths the more nothing changes. Good luck, be safe out there.

Submitted by PTC4LIFE on Tue, 07/22/2008 - 11:14am.

I realize I am ranting in the wind to an extent, but maybe I will make some people think about it next time they are out on the path system.

I have submitted some solutions to the Chief, and they include no cost/low cost ideas. I'll be putting pressure on any official that has the ability to help solve the problem we have on the paths and so should others that care about our city.

I want to know what in the world young kids are doing DRIVING golf carts anyway. I get so tired of driving around town and seeing young 16 year old kids not paying attention when they are driving a car, let alone seeing 12-14 year old kids driving golf carts. It makes me nervous knowing that there are young kids on the roads let alone the cart paths that don't know what they are doing. Letting children loose on golf carts is just asking for trouble. This graffiti that you see sprayed along side the buildings in Kedron and houses is getting down right ridiculous. I remember living here when I was younger before I moved and not being able to drive my parent's golf carts even with them riding with me. I think that in order to be able to drive and operate a golf cart you need to be able to know how to drive a car as well. The city needs to do something about this and fast. The reason these girls probably got hurt is because the person behind them were probably young kids too that have no business driving in the first place.

simpleton's picture
Submitted by simpleton on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 9:07pm.

I am of the opinion that the driving age should be raised by at least two years anyway. As for the golf carts, I know that when I was fifteen years old I wasn't responsible enough to operate something like that and I highly doubt that there are many teens in Peachtree City who are.

Submitted by fluffybear on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 5:28pm.

Let us not forget about the number of kids riding around with their feet up, driving with one hand and talking on a cell phone.

Peachtree City (better yet Georgia)should make using a cell phone while operating a vehicle (of any kind) illegal and punishable with stiff fines. Most of these kids do not have the skills and experience behind the wheels and using something like a cell phone only makes matters worse.

It seems that its always the nice folk that get hurt and taken for granted.
Since summer has started the golf cart paths around this city have become a race course for the reckless youth to drive as fast as they see fit. I am suprised no one has been more seriously injured than this one minor accident, but I think the next one might not be that lucky.
With two carts at top speed of +20mph hitting each other head on is like driving into a solid wall at 40+mph....It might sting a little.
Instead of the cops looking for teenagers to harrass on the roads, maybe they should start to look at the cart paths to make it a little safer for the residents that enjoy the paths for what they were meant for: leisure, not NASCAR training!!!!!

Submitted by Linda Wheatley on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 3:15pm.

I agree Beekman! Although not nearly as serious as someone causing a golf cart accident, the grafitti has hit an all time high in my area. The tunnels and walls between the Kedron Kroger and North Cove/Kedron Hills are covered with profanity. A little more supervision on the paths might make a difference!

mother hen's picture
Submitted by mother hen on Tue, 07/22/2008 - 11:27am.

The police appear to be doing something about it. The golf cart tunnel between Ardenlee and Kedron is frequently covered in graffiti from wanna-be gangsters. A few weeks ago, as I was driving through with my children, a group of detectives were there taking pictures and when I asked about it, they said they're looking into it. If you call the station and let them know about the graffiti in the tunnels and on the fences, they might come out there and take a look.

By the way, there's a gentleman who lives near there who paints over the graffiti every chance he gets - thank you! More of us should follow your example.
