Tyrone Town Council approved a new employee health insurance package at a called Wednesday night. Called into question over premium costs during recent budget talks, the new Aetna policy with better overall coverage significantly decreases the cost to taxpayers.

The new policy premium will cost as estimated $105,000 based on the current number of employees, said Finance Director Mary Sturm. That figure compares to the $284,613 paid by the town for the fiscal year that ended June 30, she said.

The previous year did include two factors, the town’s coverage of 100 percent of the dependent premium and three full-time librarians that went to part-time, that changed with the new fiscal year. The town council voted in June to have employees pay 50 percent of dependent coverage and, in the case of the change in full-time to part-time status, the town does not provide the health package for part-time employees.

The new package includes medical coverage, dental coverage, 90-day long-term disability, vision coverage on a volunteer basis, short-term disability with volunteer participation and basic life insurance equal to the annual salary along with accidental death benefits with volunteer coverage for family members.

Town Manager Chris Venice said the town hopes to have the new plan in place by September.
