Sam’s Club construction to begin at Fischer Crossing in August

Fischer Crossing developer Scott Seymour has maintained all along that 800,000 square feet of commercial space was destined for the intersection of Fischer Road and Ga. Highway 34 in east Coweta. A national recession and a Chapter 11 reorganization for the developer notwithstanding, it seems Seymour was right. The deal on the development’s first anchor store, a 136,000 square-foot Sam’s Club, closed Tuesday and construction work is expected to begin in mid-August.

Coweta Fire Dept. Charity Golf Tournament coming July 31

The Coweta County Fire Department will hold its 13th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, July 31st at Orchard Hills Golf Club. This year’s recipient of the fundraising event will be the American Cancer Society through the county’s annual Relay for Life. This tournament over the years has supported various charities and efforts across Coweta County, including Special Olympics, Coweta County Food Pantry and various public safety community outreach efforts like the “Ghost-Outs” held regularly at county high schools.

Newnan Police are searching for an armed gunman who held up the Bank of Georgia branch at 471 U.S. Highway 29 North Tuesday morning. An undetermined amount of money was taken in the heist.

Tyrone stands firm with GA. DOT

It is back to Georgia Dept. of Transportation (DOT) with a project proposal to close the CSX railroad crossing at Valleywood Road at Senoia Road and the extend Park Drive to East Crestwood. The Tyrone Town Council Thursday agreed to send revisions for the project back to DOT with the proposal that the town be responsible for a maximum of $225,000.

Nearly all Coweta schools make AYP

Results of the 2008-2009 report released by the Georgia State Department of Education (DOE) earlier this week showed that all three Coweta County high schools, all 18 elementary schools and four of Coweta County’s six middle schools made the required Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). In total, 93 percent of Coweta schools met AYP requirements.

Development Authority names Wright as new president

Georgia Dept. of Economic Development project manager and former Newnan-Coweta Chamber President Greg Wright has been named as the Coweta County Development Authority’s next president. Wright will replace Bill Harrison, who will be retiring at the end of July.

Dial-A-Ride program launched

It is here. Coweta County’s long-awaited Dial-A-Ride program began operations transporting citizens on July 1. The program is funded with federal, state and local dollars and provides transit services to business, commercial and activity centers in Coweta County, said Coweta County Public Information Officer Patricia Palmer. 

July is sister cities month

Banners will be hung for the month of July around the courthouse square to observe the sister city connection. The city of Newnan and Ayr, Scotland have celebrated a sister city relationship since 1997.

Coweta unemployment climbs again

Unemployment figures for Coweta County and the 5-county Chattahoochee-Flint area continue to surge. Preliminary figures for May showed Coweta’s unemployment at 10.5 percent and Chatt-Flint at 11.6 percent.

A Palmetto man was arrested on drug charges July 2 after more than a dozen Crime Suppression Unit officers from Palmetto Police and Coweta County Sheriff’s Office converged on a residence off Carlton Road.

Arrested at his home at 525 Seven Bark Court was 25 year-old Ramaro Thornton, according to Palmetto Crime Scene Investigator Joyce Phillips.

Senoia okays two police vehicles

The Senoia City Council Monday night unanimously approved the purchase of two pre-owned vehicles for the Police Department. The purchase and outfitting price for the two 2008 Dodge Chargers is $41,723.

Susan Luciano, teacher at Arnall Middle School, recently completed a four-day coastal ecology workshop on Georgia’s Sapelo Island. The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR) offered the training as part of its teacher training series. Participants in the training investigated Georgia’s coastal systems with an emphasis on estuarine and marine ecology, coastal species identification and adaptations, commercial and recreational fisheries and management.

Commission okays help with paving project

West Georgia Technical College received a measure of assistance from Coweta County commissioners July 7 when the board agreed to provide equipment and labor to pave a new roadway to the campus off Turkey Creek Road and to consider future financial support if funds are available. The measure passed on a 3-2 vote.

Newnan Public Works crews are making both temporary and permanent patches to potholes in streets all over the City of Newnan. The city is asking for public input to get a handle on potholes. The City's goal is to patch potholes within 72 hours of learning about them.

Senoia charter school down but not out

The bid by Charter Schools USA to establish a K-8 charter school in Senoia was defeated June 25 by a unanimous vote of the Coweta County School Board. Charter Schools has the option of presenting the petition to the Georgia Charter Schools Commission for consideration later this summer.

Instead of lounging by the pool or watching television, the 17-year-old – who recently returned from the 2009 Washington Youth Tour (WYT), a leadership program sponsored by the electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) of Georgia, including Coweta-Fayette EMC – visited Congressional leaders in our nation’s capitol.

It was as professional a photography exhibition as anything you would see in Buckhead, as the photographic and interviewing skills of 12 Palmetto youngsters were displayed at the Palmetto Community Center June 27 and 28. Their efforts culminated in “Our Lives, Our Land, Our Legacy,” an exhibition of the Palmetto Cultural Arts Project funded in part by the Fulton County Arts Council and the City of Palmetto.

Neighborhood Community Bank fails

Residents of Coweta and Fayette counties lost another local bank with the June 26 closing of Neighborhood Community Bank (NCB) by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance (DBF). The Newnan-based bank operated two branches in Coweta County, along with branches in Peachtree City and Tyrone. NCB deposit accounts were transferred to CharterBank of West Point.

Commission supports proposed airport improvements

The Coweta County Commission last week gave unanimous approval to support proposed improvements to Newnan-Coweta Airport. The improvements are expected to be funded largely by federal dollars.
