Unemployment figures for Coweta County and the 5-county Chattahoochee-Flint area continue to surge. Preliminary figures for May showed Coweta’s unemployment at 10.5 percent and Chatt-Flint at 11.6 percent. Preliminary figures for May show Coweta at 10.5 percent unemployment with 6,188 county residents out of work. Coweta’s work force is estimated at 59,089. The May figures represent a significant jump from the 9.3 percent unemployment rate in April and a 5.4 percent rate in May 2008. The preliminary unemployment situation in the City of Newnan for May was 12.3 percent, compared to a rate of 10.6 percent in April and 6.8 percent in May 2008. Figures for the Chattahoochee-Flint area also worsened in the past month, with May unemployment climbing to 11.5 percent, compared to 10.6 percent in April and 6.2 percent in May 2008. Labor force figures show 18,042 people unemployed in the Chatt-Flint area. Unemployment in Carroll County rose to 11 percent in May, up from 10.4 percent in April. In Heard County the May rate jumped from 12.1 percent in April to 12.7 percent in May. The situation in Troup County was even worse, with 13.4 percent unemployment in May compared to 12.6 percent in April. And in Meriwether County, the region’s worst unemployment figures showed a rate of 13.6 percent in May compared to 12.6 in April. May figures statewide showed an unemployment rate of 9.7 percent, compared to 9.2 percent in April and 5.9 percent in May 2008. login to post comments |
