Early voting starts today for House 72 seat

Two polling sites will be open all week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. so voters can cast their ballots in the four-way special election to fill the 72nd district seat in the Georgia House of Representatives.

School affidavit deadline is December 18

The Coweta County Board of Education office at 237 Jackson Street in Newnan will stay open until 7 p.m. on December 11 and 13, to help parents file affidavits of residency before the end of the first semester.

Blood drive today at Gathering Place

With an urgent need for blood donations during the holiday season, the American Red Cross is conducting a blood drive today (Friday) from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Gathering Place off McIntosh Trail.

Court of appeals rejects county’s firearms ordinance

The Georgia Court of Appeals is sending a Coweta County ordinance back to the drawing board.

On Tuesday, the court sided with Georgia Carry.org in its case against the county.

Palmetto annexes 250 more acres into coweta

Palmetto is expanding further into Coweta County. Council members Dec. 3 unanimously approved the annexation of 254.71 acres on the city’s south side. The annexation will extend the city limits to I-85.

Clayton State christens Fayette facility

Local officials and business leaders welcomed Clayton State University to Fayette County Tuesday night in a ceremony at the school’s new Fayette campus, on the second floor of an office building at 1200 Commerce Drive in Peachtree City.

The Fayette County Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to get even tougher on water violators. The County Commission decided to codify an ordinance that would outline stiffer penalties for water violators during times of state-mandated water restrictions.

Tour de Georgia skipping Fayette this year

The route for the 2008 Tour de Georgia was announced Wednesday morning and it doesn't appear to be going through Fayette County. Peachtree City had the official start of the race last year and Fayetteville was a stage start for the two years prior to that.

Commission OKs defined benefits concept for employees

Within the next seven months, Fayette County's employees will have a new retirement plan.
With a 4-1 vote Wednesday afternoon, the County Commission set in place the conversion from a strict direct contribution benefits plan to a hybrid plan that will feature a defined benefits component. Defined benefits will provide retiring county workers with more of their pre-retirement income, but employees will have to make a mandatory 2 percent contribution of salary towards the plan.

6 still at large for gun store break-in; video shows burglars' hit on store

Sheriff's deputies are still looking for six men who coordinated a smash-and-grab burglary at Autrey's Armory gun shop in north Fayette County early Wednesday morning.

Earlier reports that four of the suspects were arrested in Clayton County turned out to be false, police officials said, as those four were arrested for another agency's case.

After using a stolen truck to pull off the burglar bars and front door around 4 a.m., six black males burst inside and systematically stole 75-80 weapons, mostly Sig Sauer and Glock pistols, deputies said. The suspects also took a Springfield semi-automatic .308 rifle with a bipod and collapsible stock, deputies said.

The Fayette County Board of Education announced the workshop on elementary school lines has been changed from Dec.11 at 7 p.m. to Dec.13 at 8 a.m.

Sturbaum handily beats King in PTC runoff

Doug Sturbaum handily won the runoff election for the Post 2 seat in Peachtree City.

With all precincts reporting, Sturbaum took 838 votes (61 percent) while opponent Mike King took 522 votes (38 percent).
