After years of planning and conducting its first election in November, the city of Chattahoochee Hill Country finally has a mayor and a full contingent of council members.

The Tuesday runoff election for mayor and three of the five council seats sets the stage for the new city to begin municipal operations next week.

In the race for mayor, Don Hayes defeated Tom Reed 458 votes to 335, taking 58 percent of the vote.

Also decided were races for council seats in Districts 2, 3 and 5. In District 2, Carl Hattaway took 56 percent of the votes, besting Julie Petty Wall 93 votes to 73.

The District 3 race saw David Hanson defeating Laurie Searle 132 votes to 94 and receiving 58 percent of the vote.

And in District 5, Tuesday’s closest race ended with Rodney Peek receiving 104 votes, or 53 percent, to the 91 garnered by Ernie Henderson.

All that remains to be counted by Fulton County are approximately 29 absentee and advanced votes.

The Nov. 6 vote resulted in the election of District 1 candidate John Taylor and District 4 candidate Faye Peek Godwin.
