PTC businesses alerted for scammer

Peachtree City police have issued a warning on a person accused of fraudulent credit card use.

The suspect, Danyez Hines, 18, is going to hotels and motels and using a fraudulent credit card to charge rooms, police said. The hotels don't find out about the card until the next day when the suspect has left, police said.

Southern Community Bancshares, Inc. announced Oct. 10 that its bank subsidiary, Southern Community Bank, has agreed to the entry of a ”cease and desist” order with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance.

According to the news release, the bank’s holding company sold $2 million in common stock to inject new capital into the bank to comply with the order.

The buyers of the common stock are members of the bank’s board of directors and represent a Who’s Who of Fayette area businessmen.

Commissioners discuss revamping Tyrone development districts

Tyrone’s Planning Commission made a move Thursday to potentially adjust three overlapping development district boundaries currently on the books. The outcome of the Oct. 9 work session was designed to solve the issue of the overlapping boundaries of the Main Street District and Traditional Residential area included in the town’s Comprehensive Plan and the Town Center District included in the zoning ordinance. Currently under consideration is a proposal to do away with the Main Street District by wrapping it into and expanding the Town Center District while squaring off and expanding the Traditional Residential area.

Is another tax bill on the way?

The Georgia Dept. of Revenue has informed Coweta County that an additional levy of $108,173 in taxes is needed to correct property assessments the state claims are lower than the 40 percent of fair market value required by law. But the commissioners Oct. 7 decided to appeal the Dept. of Revenue Sept. 19 letter that said the county’s combined ratio was 35.94 percent. The commissioners said taxpayers should not be burdened with another tax bill unless completely necessary.

County ponders purchase of $1 million ladder truck

The Coweta County Commission is expected in November to consider to purchase a ladder truck for the county fire department. The item was on the Oct. 7 agenda but the board agreed to postpone discussion until next month. Fire Chief Bill Haynes recommended the purchase of a 2009 Sutphen Custom SPH-100 Aerial Platform from Williams Fire Apparatus for $1.058 million.

Peachtree City police have released this sketch of the person who robbed the Music and Arts store at The Avenue in Peachtree City Sunday morning.

The suspect had a tattoo on his neck that says "Thug" in cursive or script writing, said Capt. Rosanna Dove of the Peachtree City Police Department.

The suspect also had a tattoo that began near his wrist, but the victim only saw a small part of it, Dove said.

The second wave of World War II veterans from Fayette and surrounding counties are on their way to Washington, D.C. this morning for their day-long trip to visit the WWII Memorial.

The veterans and their guardians - who will assist them during the trip - departed after a spirited breakfast at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church that featured music from Peachtree Jazz Edition.

As they boarded the buses, a small crowd that braved the rain cheered the veterans and wished them well on their trip, waving flags and goodbye as they depart on their trip, which is completely free of charge to veterans thanks to donors to Honor Flight Fayette.
