‘Fool’s Gold’ takes a plunge

Valentine’s Day is nearly upon us, and you know what that means...an evening of romance. For those of us who are single gals, it means dinner and a movie with our other single gal pals. So, what many ladies in my situation will be looking for is a fun romantic comedy to live vicariously through during our evening with friends. So, you might be thinking, “That new movie with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey looks like a great choice.” To you I would say, “Save your $10! Instead go see ‘Juno’ or ‘27 Dresses.’ Or better yet, rent a DVD and cozy up at home.”

‘The Golden Compass’: Completely lost

Although 2007 was a year that featured a lot of excellent adaptations from book to film (“Atonement,” “No Country for Old Men,”), “The Golden Compass” is not one of them. The books by Phillip Pullman are terrific, fantasy-filled books with rich characters and a very moving story, but the movie is kind of blah.

Twilight presents Valentine’s Day show starting Thursday

The Twilight Theatre will kick off its 2008 season with a Broadway review, “Broadway By Candlelight.” The show will feature love songs – some Broadway favorites as well as some lesser known and maybe unexpected love songs – done entirely by candlelight.

‘Martian Child’ not so strange

I didn’t get the chance to see “Martian Child” while it was in theaters, but with the DVD being released for sale on Tuesday, Feb. 12, I was offered a pre-release copy to view. I love John Cusack – in fact I’ve seen at least 20 of his films – so I was excited to check out this film based on a short story (and later a book) by David Gerrold.

‘Michael Clayton’: Good for grown ups

When I was young, my parents would go out every now and then to a movie. My sister and I would beg to go to the movies, too, but were told that whatever they were seeing wasn’t a movie for kids – films like “Sophie’s Choice” or “Body Double,” I suppose. Whatever they saw, the films were going to have adult themes and story-lines and, aside from needing a night out to themselves, the films would go over our heads and likely also bore us to tears.

‘There Will Be Blood’: The best movie of the year

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” is a fantastic film. Hailed by many critics as a masterpiece, it is nothing short of amazing and cements Anderson as one of the best and brightest directors working today. “There Will Be Blood” is a unique cinematic experience. It is unlike any movie I can recall and even now, less than 24 hours after screening it, I can’t wrap my head around it all.

Filmmakers need to make no ‘Atonement’ for this Oscar nominee

Based on the best-selling novel by Ian McEwan, “Atonement” has been nominated for 53 awards and even won the award for “Best Motion Picture - Drama” at the Golden Globes in January. Later this month it will compete for the coveted “Best Motion Picture of the Year” award, as well as six other awards, at the Oscars. Having just finished reading the novel, I was immensely curious to see if the film would live up to the hype. Thankfully it does.

Say ‘I do’ to ‘27 Dresses’

“27 Dresses” isn’t your typical romantic-comedy chick-flick. Well, at least not entirely. In fact, my expectations were off-mark about what the film was and where it would go, and for that I’m quite grateful.

‘Cloverfield’: Monster hit

This film had been hyped since the initial trailer hit screens last July. Fanboys and movie geeks pondered just what “Cloverfield” was for months and now we know. It’s a monster movie shot from the perspective of the the people running for their lives in the city (New York City - Mahattan specifically) under attack and it is brillant.

The concert will feature three top bluegrass bands, including Southern Heart, The Suggins Brothers and Drivetrain, with special guests Curtis and Holly Jones.

‘The Kite Runner’ stays on course

I’m always a little apprehensive when going in to see a film based on a book. I’m a big-time reader and one of my favorite novels I’ve read to date was “The Kite Runner,” so when I first heard that they were making a movie based on Khaled Hosseini’s 2003 best-selling novel, I wasn’t sure what to think.

‘The Orphanage’: Adopt this movie

I could not believe my luck that a well-known, critically acclaimed foreign film was actually playing on the south side of Atlanta. I don’t think this has happened since last year’s juggernaut, “Pan’s Labyrinth,” captured audience’s imaginations. Interestingly enough Guillermo del Toro (director of “Pan’s Labyrinth”) was involved with “The Orphanage” as well (he served as executive producer).

‘Charlie Wilson’s War’: ‘Sorkin’ it in

Fans of the television programs “Sports Night,” “The West Wing,” and the short-lived “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” know Aaron Sorkin’s trademark, fast-paced, witty dialogue, his love for politics and his sentimentality. All of those things are evident in “Charlie Wilson’s War,” a movie he wrote and legendary director Mike Nichols directed, although the speed of the dialogue wasn’t as fast as in Sorkin’s past. The key to the success of Sorkin’s television programs was strong ensemble casts and “Charlie Wilson’s War” boasts a strong cast, albeit a rather small one. While the star power of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts can’t be denied, they are both outshined by the story, which is both a little crazy and true to boot, and another outstanding performance from the always solid Philip Seymour Hoffman.
