Fayetteville City Council’s first meeting of 2007 might well be memorable for several reasons. Council members will consider approving the Ga. Highway 54 Task Force Concept Plan and will potentially vote on a measure to limit the number of animals per household and consider a rezoning request for the proposed Stella Place subdivision on Grady Avenue.

New elections supervisor

Tom Sawyer has taken the position previously held by the late Margaret Malone, who served as the Fayette County Elections and Voter Registration Supervisor. Her untimely death was July 10, 2006.

Feds offer phone tax refund this year

Anyone who had telephone service at any time from March 2003 through July 2006 may be able to receive a one-time federal tax refund of part of the federal telephone taxes that were paid, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

A Fayetteville day care employee has been arrested for causing a “serious” arm injury to a 14-month old boy at the center, police said.

Police also revealed Thursday that they are investigating a second child abuse case at Magnolia Park Day Care Center that was reported Dec. 1 although no arrests have yet been made. And a local attorney reported that a third similar incident dating back to September has now been reported to Fayetteville police.

That was one of the comments made recently by a Philip Services Corp. (PSC) employee who had first hand knowledge of the chemicals inhaled by residents in large areas of Fayette and south Fulton counties during the summer and fall. Affected residents maintain that those chemical emissions emanated from the company’s waste treatment plant on Ga. Highway 92 near Fairburn. The story is not new, with hundreds of area residents claiming that their illnesses were due to emissions of chemical odorant Propyl mercaptan and organophosphate pesticide MOCAP. What is new is having confirmation of the similar symptoms by someone employed at the plant.

The Citizen has profiled Fayetteville resident John Parker and his “Shark Shower” on several occasions.

Parker constructed the outdoor shower that looks like a Great White shark for his lakeside home. The shark is 15 feet tall and is made of metal, foam, plexiglass and spray on bed liner.

It is the opening conversation into the future of the heart of Fayette County. County commissioners Dec. 14 voted unanimously to approve the concept plan of the Ga. Highway 54 Task Force.

Coordinated by Fayette County and the city of Fayetteville, the master plan encompasses a 2,060-acre area in the county’s midsection situated along the burgeoning medical/office corridor and largely north of Hwy. 54 between Fayetteville and Tyrone Road.
