Sheriff’s DUI checkpoints nets 6 arrests

Checkpoints part of holiday operation targeting impaired drivers

Six people were arrested on various charges late Friday evening when the traffic division of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office operated a checkpoint to find DUI offenders.

Several motorists were arrested for DUI and one was arrested for using a fake Social Security card as identification, officials said. Another was arrested for driving while unlicensed and admitted to being in the country illegally, said Lt. Col. Wayne Hannah.

When one of the cars pulled up, it was immediately apparent a DUI arrest was in the offing, based on the amount of marijuana smoke wafting from the vehicle when the window was rolled down, Hannah said.

A number of drivers were issued citations for not having their licenses on their person. Because they didn’t have their licenses on them, they had to call a friend or family member to pick up themselves and their car, Hannah noted.

One of the roadblocks was operated in the Tyrone area while the other was in north Fayette County.
