The Rotary Club of Fayetteville recently honored four local workers, each outstanding in their field. The Teacher of the Year award was given to Shelly McLemore. She is a science teacher at Flat Rock Middle School. She entered teaching as a second career and has been teaching for six years. She was chosen as the 2006 Fayette County Teacher of the Year from a pool of 28 candidates. She will represent Fayette County at the State competition in the Spring of 2007. Policeman of the Year was J. D. Lakeman. He graduated from the Georgia Police Corps program and became a member of the Fayetteville Police Department in 2001. He is a graduate of Sandy Creek High School and has a bachelor's degree in Studio Art from Georgia State University. He participated in the capture of the "Tinseltown" robbers last year. He developed a program to assist the drivers' education students at Fayette County High School. Currently Officer Lakeman is assigned as the School Resource Officer at Fayette Middle School. Fireman of the Year award was given to Capt. Steven G. Folden. He is the EMS Educator for the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. He joined the organization as a volunteer in 1985 and became a paid firefighter in 1987. He has over 20 years as a first responder, EMT, and paramedic, progressing through the education and rank system to hold his present rank as Captain. Healthcare Person of the Year went to Gail D. McNair, a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Currently she is president of the board of directors for the Fayette C.A.R.E. It provides medical services for people who may be employed but do not have the resources for medical care. The clinic includes a pharmacy that dispenses non-narcotic medications. Piedmont Fayette Hospital, one of its primary sponsors, is supporting the need for laboratory and radiology needs. The Fayetteville Rotary meets each Monday noon at the Village Café. login to post comments |
