Spring registration for kindergarten, Pre-K

Spring registration for rising kindergarten and new elementary school students has been set for May 2-3 at all Fulton County elementary schools. The registration dates are planned for students who will be entering elementary school for the first time in 2007-08. To register, parents should visit the elementary school their child will attend in the fall. Students zoned to attend the new Oakley Township elementary school in Union City should register at the elementary school currently serving their home. Registration hours are from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on May 2 and from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. on May 3.

Fairburn cops nab burglar

“I did it for the thrill.”

That was the response this week of a local resident cuffed for multiple burglaries.

12 handguns stolen from pawn shops

Palmetto Police are seeking information on the theft of handguns in the recent burglaries of two local pawn shops.

Detective John Cooper said the burglaries occurred March 1 at The Pawn House at 582 Main Street and on March 8 at The Pawn Shop at 202 Fayetteville Road.

Town turns down office zoning

There won’t be additional office space on Dogwood Trail in tyrone in the near future.

For the second time in two years, the Town Council Thursday night turned down a proposal to rezone 632 Dogwood Trail from R-42, Single Family Residential to Office Institution. The property is near the Marketplace office complex at the intersection of Dogwood Trail and Ga. Highway 74.

Downtown development derailed

The town of Tyrone’s master plan for revitalizing downtown took a major hit Thursday night as the Town Council denied developer Burt Clark’s zoning request for more than 50 acres of prime downtown real estate near Palmetto Road and Swanson Road.

Argo hired as Palmetto fire chief

The man hired to run Palmetto’s fire department may be new to citizens and to the city’s new department, but he is not new to firefighting. Fire Chief Henry Argo comes with 30 years experience in firefighting under his belt.

SPLOST vote is March 20

The Fulton County Board of Education says it wants to build eight new schools in south Fulton and make classroom additions to three others. Speaking Thursday, Superintendent James Wilson told members of the South Fulton Chamber of Commerce the March 20 vote to continue the schools system’s one-percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) will provide the means to build the new schools and make additions and upgrades to others.

Scott pays a visit to his constituents

They came with a room full of questions and concerns about their future. More than 60 residents of Cliftondale and south Fulton County met with Congressman David Scott at a town hall meeting March 3 at Cliftondale Community Center to discuss issues ranging from eminent domain and recent annexations to illegal immigration and the war in Iraq.

Fairburn OKs landfill annexation

It was down to the wire Feb. 26 with a tie-breaking vote required by Mayor Betty Hannah to annex a 14.49-acre tract owned by Safeguard Construction & Demolition (C&D) Landfill into Fairburn city limits.

Newest subdivision plat gets OK

The preliminary plat for Williamsburg, Fairburn’s newest proposed subdivision, won approval from the city council Feb. 26 on a 4-2 vote and with the opposition of neighbors taken into account. Though previously approved and in compliance with city ordinances, the council put conditions on the approval that addressed some of neighbors’ concerns.

Fairy tales come to life

Liam McDermott as Little Red Riding Hood and Erika Hamburg-Brown as the Wolf in Offshoot Productions’ “Fairy Tale Project.” The play will run at Tyrone’s Roger Spencer Community Center through Sunday and then begin touring.

Downtown development tops next week’s agenda

The battle lines have been drawn, and next week’s meeting of the Tyrone Town Council could be one for the ages.

On one side is developer Burt Clark, who wants to makeover the town’s downtown area and bring a denser development to the area, along with a residential area that would cater to the area’s growing population of senior residents.

Fourth grade science classes at Landmark Christian School are comparing and contrasting the characteristics of invertebrates including sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, roundworms, segmented worms, mollusks, echinoderms and arthropods. Union City says move cemetery

It was a win for developers, the family said. A request by Koman Properties to relocate the old Silvey family cemetery on property at Ga. Highway 92 and South Fulton Parkway destined for commercial development was approved Feb. 20 by the Union City Council on a 3-1 vote. The request had been tabled from the January meeting.

Burglary arrest nets drugs and guns


It was a lot of bang for the buck, at least in terms of law enforcement activity. Two Palmetto women and a Jonesboro man were arrested Feb. 26 on multiple charges after Fairburn Police Officer Zack Phillips found them at a previously burglarized residence on Rivertown Road in possession of drugs, a weapon and a Clayton County law enforcement badge.

Dead man found in Union City apartment

A Union City man was found murdered in his apartment Monday after co-workers inquired about his absence from work. Union City Police have a man in custody in connection with the death.

Hardy appointed to CID board

A rose by any other name, the saying goes. The same holds true for a community activist. And there are few people if any in south Fulton County who fit the role of community activist more than Sandra Hardy. Her most recent involvement came in February with the appointment to the board of directors of South Fulton Community Improvement District (CID).

Pizza man robbed

It is a pretty sad situation when the pizza dude can not make a delivery without getting robbed. And that is exactly what happened Feb. 23 after a pizza was delivered to a Carlton Road address in Palmetto.

Courthouse lease approved

What began in late 2006 with questions over the lease of the old courthouse to Old Campbell County Historical Society ended in a unanimous vote by Fairburn City Council Feb. 26 to approve the lease and appoint the organization as curator of the historic building.
