The Tyrone Town Council Thursday night unanimously approved acting Chief David Mullis as police chief.

The vote comes months after Chief Johnny Hay retired, and applications poured in from around the country.

“We received more than 50 applications, including several from Ohio and Florida,” said town manager Barry Amos.

Mullis has been with the department since 1996.

All I can say is that I have known David Mullis for a long time and that he is an exceptional person. Sometimes the best people for the job are not always the ones with college. Having a piece of paper on the wall means that you understand theory, but it does not mean that you understand how to apply it. Sometimes the best choices are based on character, morals, and the ability to get the job done and Mr. Mullis fills these needs.

His officers have a tremendous amount of respect for him as do most of the people in the community who know him. He is going to do a fine job for Tyrone.

No one is debating Mr. Mullis' character or his ability to do the job. However, the way in which the "right person" was chosen in most everyone I have spoken withs opinion is what is being scrutinized. It goes to prove everyone's point about the Mayor and her ability to do the "right" thing. I wish Mr. Mullis all the well wishes I can, he has his work cut out for him. I hope he can handle Barney.

Too true "shameontyrone". But you have to know by now how the Tyrone gov't works. Nothing surprises me anymore except the fact that Barry Amos is still employed by the Town. No one likes him or respects him. You can't trust him. I think it is completly odd that, John Hay (who didn't want the Chief's job)was appointed Chief of Police and he takes a sick leave after being appointed and now David Mullis (who didn't want the Chief's job) has done the same thing. What is going on? Come on, someone in that government has got to care, right?

To make a difference in the world, you must first dare to be different.

Barry, the citizens and business owners are tired of your lies. You stated that David Mullis was promoted to Chief because he had college. That was a bold face lie. Yes, Barry I checked into what you said. I didn’t take your word for it. You are a liar. If you lie about this, you lie about everything else. He didn’t even apply for the job. I know that three Tyrone police applied for the position and that none were even considered. I know that those three had more experience and education than Mr. Mullis. I also know that Mr. Mullis told several citizens and businesses that he didn’t even want the position. So, why is it that he was made to take the job? What was wrong with the other three officers? Or better yet, what about the 50 or more other applicants that applied? Sheryl Lee and Barry, what despicable things are you up to? The rest of Council, what are you up to? We business owners want to know. Citizens and business owners of Tyrone, we need to act now. Mr. Mullis, this is by no means a reflection on you, I know that you are a pawn.
