Qualifying time set for December 18 special election

Secretary of State Karen Handel announced today that qualifying for the December 18 special election to fill Rep. Dan Lakly's seat is November 19 through November 21. Qualifying on Monday will run from 9 am until 5:30 pm; on Tuesday from 8 am until 5:30 pm and on Wednesday from 8 am until 12 noon.

Peachtree City voters will have to head back to the polls Tuesday, Dec. 4 to nail down the final open seat on the City Council.

Don Haddix was declared the winner of the post 1 seat Tuesday night, handily defeating incumbent Mike Harmon and challenger Tom O’Toole. Haddix, who has said he is “semi-retired,” took 57 percent of the nearly 3,000 votes cast in the race.

It was only a short wait Tuesday night before Senoia and Sharpsburg residents knew who would be their elected officials in the new year. Senoia Mayor Robert Belisle easily captured a second term and proclaimed the vote count as an affirmation that the city was headed in the right direction. Shortly after 7:45 p.m., poll workers taped the results to the door of the East Coweta Senior Center, where voters cast their ballots in the city's one precinct.

City identifies four library sites

By next week, Senoia officials should have a better idea about where the city’s new library will be located.

During Monday night’s City Council meeting, city administrator Richard Ferry told city officials that four alternative sites had been identified for the building. The sites are a vacant lot next to City Hall on Main Street, a site near the city’s ballfields off Howard Road, a site near the city’s near park at the intersection of Ga. Highway 16 and Pylant Street and near the railroad bridge on Rockaway Road.

Ex-wife pleads guilty to murder of PTC man

DA: photos of Eric Ulrich and fiancee may have 'set off' April Ulrich

A Powder Springs woman pleaded guilty today to killing her ex-husband back in October 2006 at a business in Peachtree City.

April Dawn Ulrich was sentenced to life in prison and will not be allowed to apply for parole for 30 years, said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard. The plea came just before opening statements were to commence in the trial, and it dramatically reduces the chance of a possible appeal, Ballard noted.
