VIDEO - Simply purrrfect! Fayette caps undefeated season, defeats Starr's Mill 28-14

There are certain moments in life that are unforgettable — marriage, the birth of a child and high school graduation, among many others.

The Fayette County Tigers experienced an unforgettable feat they will cherish for a lifetime Friday, defeating the host Starr’s Mill Panthers for the first time ever, 28-14, to complete the first undefeated regular season in school history.

Fayette ended the regular season 10-0 overall and 8-0 in Region 2-AAAA. It will play at home against Baldwin in the first round of the state playoffs Friday.

Early on, it appeared that Starr’s Mill was on its way to spoiling what many felt would be a memorable night for Fayette, taking a 14-0 lead late into the second quarter.

Spencer Penson opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run to cap an eight-play, 72-yard drive on Starr’s Mill’s second possession of the game.

Starr’s Mill linebacker Chris Sudduth met Fayette County quarterback Brandon Boykin in the backfield and stripped him of the ball, picking up the loose ball and returning it 20 yards for a touchdown to increase Starr’s Mill’s lead to 14-0 with 5:02 left in the second quarter.

Boykin shook off the mishap on Fayette’s next, and final, series of the first half, answering with a 9-yard touchdown run on an option keeper off left tackle that completed a nine-play, 80-yard drive.

"That drive was real big going into halftime," Fayette coach Tommy Webb said. "It gave us a lot of confidence, and it showed that, despite being down 14-0, we were still ready to fight and compete."

Fayette played a far superior second half, coming back to outscore Starr’s Mill 21-0.

Surprisingly, Fayette didn't make any adjustments at halftime, Webb said.

"We told the kids before the game that Starr's Mill would come out and play," Webb said. "They hit us in the mouth and knocked us down. What we told the kids at halftime was, 'We got knocked down, but a champion team will get right back up and play.' We made absolutely no adjustments other than to get off blocks, make blocks and make plays. And the kids just came out and played."

Fullback Matt Daniels took an option pitch from Boykin, slipped through multiple tackles and weaved his way to the end zone on a 25-yard run that tied the game at 14 on Fayette’s second possession of the second half.

The touchdown run by Daniels wouldn't have occurred without a leaping catch by wide receiver Terrow Davis that converted a fourth-and-5 and kept the drive alive.

Daniels had a monster game for Fayette, rushing for 151 yards on 19 carries. He led a Fayette offense that finished with 353 total yards of offense (255 rushing, 98 passing).

Daniels and Boykin, who did an exceptional job of running Fayette’s option offensive attack, wore down Starr’s Mill's defense with their speed and elusiveness in the second half.

Boykin’s 9-yard touchdown run on which he faked a toss sweep left, took off running down the right sideline and leaped into the end zone from within the 5-yard line capped a nine-play, 86-yard drive with 7:19 remaining in the fourth quarter and put Fayette ahead for good, 21-14.

All but two plays on the drive featured runs by either Boykin or Daniels, who had a 48-yard run down the right sideline.

Boykin was confident all along that Fayette would go undefeated.

"This is an unbelievable season," Boykin said. "We've said since the first week of the season that we would be 10-0 at the end of the year. Starr's Mill was the first team that really challenged us, but we liked that because we're competitors. We came out and took care of business."

Turnovers on Starr's Mill's final two possessions sealed the team's fate. Fayette’s Barack Little picked off a Miles Jaye screen pass intended for Terrell Tripp and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 3:43 left to complete the scoring.

Fayette cornerback Cuincy Carruthers intercepted a Jaye pass on Starr's Mill's next series to essentially end the game.

The Tigers' defense was gashed by running back Parker duPont (eight carries, 105 yards) early, but it clamped down on Starr's Mill's spread offense as the game went along, limiting the Panthers to under 200 yards of total offense (193).

Starr's Mill finished the regular season 5-5 overall and 4-4 in Region 2-AAAA, missing the state playoffs.

Blown opportunities and a penalty that nullified a touchdown cost Starr's Mill; Sam Martin missed a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter, duPont was stopped short of the first-down marker by a host of Fayette defenders on fourth-and-1 from the Fayette 25-yard line in the first quarter, and an illegal procedure penalty negated a Jaye-to-Tripp 52-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

"The touchdown that was called back was a momentum killer," Starr's Mill coach Mike Earwood said. "Having that touchdown up there wouldn't have won the game, but momentum is a big thing in high school football. That's pretty much kind of the way our season has gone."

Why does Whitewater get to play a .500 team (Lovejoy) and Fayette County has to play a state ranked power in Baldwin? Where's the logic? Baldwin should be no worse than a #3 seed. The only reason they aren't a #1 seed is because their only loss was to the #1 team in AAAA (Northside-Warner Robbins). How did they come up with this? I know region 4 is sub-divided. It looks to me like N-S Warner Robbins should be seeded #1, Griffin #2, Baldwin #3, and then Lovejoy #4. I'm extremely happy that the Tigers are going to host at least one home game in the playoffs. But, they earned the right to play a lesser team in that first round. I hope someone can give me an explanation for this.

But, and this won't be popular here, I've seen enough football in my days that if Fayette gets far vs the big boys in AAAA, I'll be shocked.

If this were 5-A ball I would agree with you, but here we won't be playing schools twice our size.

I'll be surprised if the region Fayette plays in wins more than 1 game in the first round. I've got some good friends that Coach, and there are some loaded teams in AAAA this year.

I don't think the AJC picked any of this regions teams to win in the first round. Now, I hope I'm wrong, it is lots of fun for the fans when a local team does good.

I have merely one question for you since by your language you sound like a student. Can I conclude that you were among the students in the tailgate staff that decided to spit and yell obscenities at the band from the other school, the one that needs to stop "crieng"?

So, you're back. We know you're not a Wildcat, so stop pretending. You just wish you were a Tiger or a Wildcat. Smiling

Tiger Dad, Fyt35 is a real Wildcat. onlyracistrat pretends to be, and makes an appearance once in a while to start trouble.

Try to ignore him/her. Smiling

Go Tigers! Good luck Wildcats!

I should have known. I'll know better next time not to concern myself with lesser life forms. My only concern is for all the teams to do well and represent Fayette County. GO TIGERS!! Good luck to the Wildcats and the Patriots! I'd love to see a Whitewater vs. Fayette County showdown for the crown!

...for your correct assessment and vote of confidence on Whitewater not producing "onlyrealc**p". Speaking as a Wildcat, I wish the Tigers all the best of luck in the playoffs. This is definitely the year of the Tiger!! Of course I'm real proud of my Wildcats as well!

First of all, I'm not "crieng". There's even an article in the Atlanta Constitution this morning about it (see below for the article). Second of all, if that's the grammar you learned at Whitewater (I assume since you claim to be in the playoffs as well), I'm glad my kids don't go there. I thought Whitewater was a respectable school. I hope you (whether you're a student or parent) are the exception. Sounds like you might be the one "crieng" anyway. I'm sorry the ORIGINAL real cats in town are #1 this year. And another thing..."we are in and you are in - this is how it work. get over it!"??? Is this really how it "work"? Geez, if you'd read my post from earlier down the list you'd have seen that I'm hoping for the best for all three Fayette schools in the playoffs. I'm guessing you didn't know that three schools were even in the playoffs. Get a clue.

Undefeated Fayette Co. getting no breaks in playoffs

By TODD HOLCOMB
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 11/12/07
Fayette County is claiming its first region championship and 10-0 record in its 50th season of football, but the Tigers aren't getting any breaks in the playoffs. Fayette, ranked No. 6 in Class AAAA, must face a higher-ranked team Friday night when No. 4 Baldwin comes to Fayetteville for the first round.

Despite an 8-1 record, Baldwin wound up as the No. 4 seed from 4-AAAA because of the oddities of a subdivided region. Baldwin's only loss is to top-ranked Northside of Warner Robins.

The GHSA apparently gives the individual regions a lot of latitude in determining seedings. How a 5-5 team can be ranked higher than a 8-1 team...oh what the heck, it ain't gonna' do any good to complain.

FCHS has scored more and allowed fewer points than Baldwin. As long as we just play our game, we'll be fine.

GO TIGERS!

I'll tell you my friend, you will go nuts trying to figure what GHSA does with the rules and how they interpret them. We went through this at WHS last year I have yet to understand it!

To everyone that passed along the info, thanks. It still puzzles me that this is the way it's handled, but I guess that's the way it is. Good luck to Fayette County, Whitewater and Sandy Creek. I'm sure they will all represent Fayette County positively in their respective classification. GO TIGERS!!

From what I gather Region 4 coaches decide who is what seed in their region so check with them!! At least that was what I gathered after checking with www.gasports.com

The Tigers are a class act. The players clearly appreciate the fans and they are a big reason for their success. I am truly impressed by the way the Tiger players come over to the fans after each game as they line up along the fence. They've obviously worked very hard to get to where they are now and deserve any and all accolades they receive. GO TIGERS!!! See you at the dome!

I don't think the Tigers would have gotten this far if it wasn't for the cheerleaders, band, and the spectators. during the game, everyone keep on cheering and motivating the team, especially when they were getting the comeback in the 2nd half.

anyone notice that almost half stars mills spectators left the stands when FCHS got in the lead.

Gotta say I've never seen anything quite like that show before. What was it? "Freestyle Dancing because it's Senior Night" show? At least it looked like the band kids really enjoyed themselves on the field. I'm glad I wasn't seeing the show from the Home stands because I saw more than enough from the Visitor stands! Puzzled

I don't know if you could see it from where you were, but myself and the other FCHS band dads could clearly see that Boykin was down before the Mill kid stripped him of the ball and scored. I couldn't believe the ref's missed that one.

Correction, I looked again and guess what, the Tigers are still 10-0, so I guess they didn't lose to ya'll after all. The only score that counts is the one at the end of the game. Do me a favor and buy a dictionary or just learn to spell.

Congratulations to the members of the FCHS football team and the coaching staff! Throughout the season, the team has consistently demonstrated character, determination, and fierce will to win, and discipline. None of this came by accident. It required work! Great effort, and great memories! Thanks!

What a great game! Thanks for always providung the public with our local heros scores and details. Mike and Kevin you both are a great asset to the reporting world in our little community of Fayette County. Of course it is wonderful when my boys at FCHS make us all so proud with their endurance and stamina to pull out a 10-0 season. Good Luck next week boys, Stay focused and keep working hard.

Plus, I want to thank Mike & Kevin for going the extra mile this season with their podcasts. They get them up and running on Saturdays in a very timely manner to cover all the county's ballgames, then mid-week, they do another podcast for other current high school sports news.

Hats off to y'all! Great job done week after week! Plus, whenever I see one, or BOTH of you, on the sidelines I know there will be thorough and fair coverage of the game. You both ROCK!

Our (FCHS1fan & mine) boys at FCHS can handle the playoff games, they have the talent, and most importantly, the heart to do what needs to be done. GO TIGERS!
