It was only a short wait Tuesday night before Senoia and Sharpsburg residents knew who would be their elected officials in the new year. Senoia Mayor Robert Belisle easily captured a second term and proclaimed the vote count as an affirmation that the city was headed in the right direction. Shortly after 7:45 p.m., poll workers taped the results to the door of the East Coweta Senior Center, where voters cast their ballots in the city's one precinct.

Belisle received 370 votes for 81 percent, while former city administrator Murray McAfee tallied 88 votes for 19 percent.

After the results were announced, Belisle thanked his supporters at a post-election party at his home, and also made a surprising announcement.

"This is it. I've missed too many of my kids' ballgames," he said. Belisle said he hopes to continue the progress the city has made in the last two years during his final term in office.

Belisle became the first mayor to be returned to office in Senoia since Joan Trammell served two terms that ended in 2001.

“The overwhelming vote difference is a surprise, but I think it’s a clear mandate to continue our progress,” Belisle added.

In Sharpsburg, Larry Hyde defeated Connie Taylor by a 24-13 count in the Post 1 race, while Gordy Anderson beat Standley Parten by a 23-16 count in the Post 2 race. In Post 3, Polly Garlington defeated former Mayor Wendell Staley by a 27-12 count.

The only ballots remaining to be counted are provisional ballots which will be tallied by Thursday.
