The centerpiece of a new veteran’s memorial in Peachtree City is getting the finishing touches on its new coat of paint.

The F-16 fighter jet will later be on display as part of the Veterans Memorial Park at Falcon Field.

She was joined by her husband Danny and by her father, Harold Hammond, who ended his service with the Coweta County Hospital Authority after more than 43 years.

Coweta County School Board in a meeting Tuesday responded to $4.036 million in state funding cuts by imposing a three-day furlough to nearly all school system staff, foregoing the purchase of school buses and using un-budgeted increases in property taxes to offset the shortfall.

Coweta gets request for sustainable organic farming

A proposal to add a zoning category to Coweta County’s Zoning and Development Ordinance allowing commercial farms to incorporate sustainable agriculture, organic gardening and agritourism on less than 20 acres got the go-ahead from commissioners last week. The Planning & Zoning Department will move forward with drafting the potential amendment as a conditional use in the Rural Conservation zoning district.

Coweta County commissioners last week agreed to consider allowing indoor shooting ranges to be established in the county. The Planning & Zoning Department will draft an ordinance amendment that, if approved, would be subject to a case-by-case examination by commissioners as a conditional use in industrial zoning districts.

Unemployment rates in Coweta County jumped again last month. Though economically healthy compared to many counties in metro Atlanta, preliminary jobless figures for June showed an unemployment rate of 11.3 percent, up a full point over May.

Fayette School Board approves three-day staff furlough

But that vote Monday night came nonetheless after Gov. Sonny Perdue’s July 22 announcement of a three percent cut in Dept. of Education (DOE) funding and a three-day staff furlough to be taken before Dec. 31.
