Unemployment rates in Coweta County jumped again last month. Though economically healthy compared to many counties in metro Atlanta, preliminary jobless figures for June showed an unemployment rate of 11.3 percent, up a full point over May.

June’s preliminary figures showed the 11.3 percent unemployment rate, equal to 6,685 people jobless in a workforce of 59,162, had risen a full point over the 10.3 percent rate from May and essentially double the 5.6 percent rate a year ago.

On its breakdown of unemployment for the state’s larger cities, DOL showed that Newnan’s unemployment rate rose more than a percentage point last month, from 12.1 percent in May to 13.4 percent in June. Newnan’s unemployment rate in June 2008 was 7.0 percent.

The unemployment situation in the Chattahoochee-Flint area also continued an upward climb in June. Chatt-Flint rates hit 12.5 percent in June compared to 11.4 percent in May and 6.7 percent in June 2008.

Next door in Fayette, Peachtree City recorded a June unemployment rate of 8.0 percent, up from 7.2 percent in May and 4.7 percent in June 2008.

As might be expected from other figures, joblessness increased across the 28-county metro Atlanta area. Preliminary figures for the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMA) were listed at a rate of 10.7 percent, compared to 9.5 percent in May and 6.2 percent a year ago.

Statewide, the preliminary unemployment rate for June also passed the 10 percent mark. The June rate was 10.1 percent when seasonally adjusted unemployment rate and 10.5 when the seasonal adjustment is not considered. Georgia’s unemployment rate in June 2008 was 6.2 percent.

And for the United States, the national unemployment rate also climbed to 9.7 percent in June, up from 9.1 percent in May and 5.7 percent a year ago.
