A Thursday morning fire caused by a lightning strike at a residence on Laurelwood Drive in Tyrone resulted in the destruction of two garages and two vehicles.

The lightning strike was witnessed by neighbors and was heard by the homeowner who was on the phone at the time, said Fayette Fire & Emergency Services Lt. Donnie Davis, adding that the two garages, positioned approximately 10 feet apart, both caught fire. One of the garages was 20 feet by 24 feet while the other was 16 feet by 20 feet.

The first fire units arrived within minutes after the homeowner called 911 at 10:39 a.m. During the course of the fire, units from around the county responded to the Laurelwood residence, Davis said.

Davis said the both garages and the two vehicles stored in them were lost. The monetary estimate of the loss totaled $55,000.

Davis said that neither residents nor firefighters were injured in the blaze that was contained by 11:23 a.m.
