The first couple of Fayette County

Mike and Janet Smola moved to Tyrone in 1993 and have been very involved in the community ever since. Janet became a member of the Fayette County Board of Education two years ago. Now her husband, Mike, will join her as an elected official after unseating incumbent Councilman Ronnie Cannon by 16 votes. The Smolas are believed to be the first married couple in the county to hold local office at the same time, but neither of them seem to think it will change their relationship in any way.

Association of Village PRIDE, Inc. receives $8,000 grant for Youth Development Program

Association of Village PRIDE, Inc. has received a $8,000 grant from the Greer-Mayer Fund of The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta to support the Rites of Passage component of its Youth Development Program. ROP is offered to middle school students attending Fayette County schools. Two of the program's overall goals are to develop resiliency and a sense of purpose in the participants, and assist them to make healthy choices.

Cadets receive Mitchell Award

In a "one for the record books" ceremony, five cadets of the Peachtree City­Falcon Field Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol were presented with the General Billy Mitchell Award at the unit's Oct. 24 meeting.
