Cadets receive Mitchell Award

In a "one for the record books" ceremony, five cadets of the Peachtree CityFalcon Field Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol were presented with the General Billy Mitchell Award at the unit's Oct. 24 meeting.

What makes the event so unusual is that the expected rate of Mitchell Awards in the unit is less than one a month. According to squadron commander Major Vince Murray, "Only 15 percent of CAP cadets ever reach the Mitchell milestone."

As part of their achievement, the five outstanding cadets were all promoted to the rank of cadet 2nd lieutenant. The new cadet lieutenants are Darcy O'Connor, 16, of Peachtree City; Jennifer Hunter, 15 and Sara Hunter 15, and Colin Lynch 15, all of Sharpsburg; and Derek Robinson, 16, of Warner Robins.

The five new cadet officers received their awards from CAP's Group 3 commander Lt. Col. Joe Knight, III, who himself got his start in CAP as a cadet. The five new "Mitchell cadets" now assume cadet staff officer positions and responsibilities in the squadron.
