Association of Village PRIDE, Inc. receives $8,000 grant for Youth Development Program

Association of Village PRIDE, Inc. has received a $8,000 grant from the Greer-Mayer Fund of The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta to support the Rites of Passage component of its Youth Development Program. ROP is offered to middle school students attending Fayette County schools. Two of the program's overall goals are to develop resiliency and a sense of purpose in the participants, and assist them to make healthy choices.

In announcing the grant, Alicia Philipp, president of The Community Foundation, said that "the Foundation is pleased to support the crucial community service that AVP provides."

Opal Murray, AVP's Executive Director says that the grant comes at a pivotal time for the agency as AVP grows to meet the needs of the Fayette County community. She says the funds will be used to strengthen the Rites of Passage Program. Currently, the program serves 30 students. They represent each of the five middle schools in the Fayette County school district.

AVP was organized as a non profit agency in 1998 to assist students to achieve academic success. It partners with Oak Grove Elementary School and Harmony Village to offer an After School Program. In addition to the Rites of Passage component, AVP offers the Youth Leaders Corps for Fayette County high school students. The YLC aims to provide skill development, instruction, and activities to help students develop the 'leader within' so that they can better take charge of their lives and increase their resilience to unhealthy behaviors.

Recognized as one of the largest and fastest growing community foundations in the country, with more than $400 million in assets, The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta manages and administers the charitable funds of 650 donors and their families. It serves 22 metro area counties and awards approximately $29 million a year to more than 1,300 nonprofit organizations. The Foundation educates donors and their families on critical issues facing the Atlanta region and connects them with non profit organizations that match their interests.
