Cell Phone and Texting Bans While Driving

OK, lets switch gears from the "my guy" is better than "your guy" sparring.

With the recent and tragic train crash in Chatsworth, Ca., much attention and action was taken due to the texting activities and the possible distraction of the train operator. With that said, what are some of your opinions regarding a ban on the use of cell phones and texting while driving here in Georgia?

I just got a blackberry with internet. Now I can not only talk and text while driving I can also, surf the web, send emails, shop, download videos and music, update my face book, trade stocks and blog all from the convenience of my driver's seat. I would never actually do any of those things but the point is that, as cell phone technology increases they become more and more dangerous. I agree that it probably more dangerous than drunk driving and eventually some sort of regulations will be necessary.

One cool thing about my new phone is that it can connect to my Gps I can talk through my car's stereo without causing anymore of a distraction than a radio.

What we need is voice recognition software on a "Blackberry".

Why not ban operating the air conditioning in your car while driving? Why not ban opening the glove compartment while driving? Why not ban eating while driving? Why not ban drinking while driving? Why not ban opening or closing the windows while driving? Why not ban messing with the stereo system while driving? Why not ban doing anything but driving while driving?

All I can say is that I'm going to text or talk on my phone while I drive when I want to with little to no regard for any laws. There are so many things you can do while driving that distract you, it's not just cell phones. People should do it regardless

You left one out: Putting make up on. Also,I hope I'm never in front of you on the road.

Clearly, that part of your brain that handles common sense isn't operative. I just hope that no one else gets hurt by your foolish actions. And if they do,I hope you get some serious slammer time. You may have been smart enough to kick the drug habit, but you can't focus on simple issues and see where they're dumb and potentially harmful. But I don't feel sorry for you--I do have some compassion for your parents.

haven't been proven to be a HUGE distraction. I could explain further, but obviously you wouldn't understand.

Continue own at your own risk, the problem is, you are putting other lives at risk by your own boorish actions.

... you surprise me. Not only do you endanger yourself (I have had one family member DIE while driving and texting) but you endanger others and you do NOT have that right. PLEASE be sensible and talk on the cell at the very most but do not - under any circumstances- TEXT while driving.

Unless you are on a multi-hour drive you can text when you stop or call but PLEASE, do not TEXT and DRIVE.

Texting is very dangerous while driving.I knew a girl who died in a car crash while in the middle of texting her boyfriend. It wouldn't need to be banned if people just realized how dangerous it can be. What can be so important that it can't wait a few minutes until you get to your destination? At least stop somewhere if it can't wait.

Submitted by MacTheKnife on Thu, 07/30/2009 - 9:06am.

If the girl you knew who died while texting was a senior at Pike County High School, and a twin, well, that was my cousin.

Her senior year. 18 and her whole life and the entire world in front of her.

Sweet, kind, sincere, smart, pretty, young, and bullet proof.... or so she thought.

It devastated all of us.

She was texting and left the road in her Jeep Cherokee and hit a tree. Now she is dead.

It could easily happen to any of us who make such a mistake and we could just as easily hit another car and kill someone else.

PLEASE do not text and drive.

Addictions such as cell phones are difficult to delay.

I have actually seen people walking the floor trying to remember someone else to call immeadiately, just to say they are at so and so place just hanging. Some will elbow you in the face to get to the phone buzzing or ringing!

Talking on the cell phone while driving is really no different than talkilng to someone in your car while driving. Its really the same type of distraction. The major problem with cell phones and driving is dialing which causes a major diversion of what the driver should be doing... paying attention to the road. A ban on cell phone use while driving would be unfair, but requiring a hands free set would be an acceptable compromise.

As far as texting while driving, you should not have to be told not to do this. Its commom sense! Sadly, some people do it anyways and might only stop after they learn the hard way. ^_^

It's not the driving with one hand that bothers me. It's driving while the other hand covers half of your face. I have found that people refuse to turn their head in the direction of their phone. Plus, the phone and hand act as a blinder. This has lead to many a near miss.

If it's not important, call em' back. If it is important, use a handsfree device.

I was rear ended on I85 southbound at the Hwy 74 exit (where traffic backs up for a mile during rush hour). The car behind me changed lanes, and the guy in the navigator behind him was looking down and dialing his phone. I watched my rearview mirror in horror as I waited for the impact.

And I think stats would prove you VERY wrong on this. It's been said that Cell Phone users are more dangerous than folks under the influence of alcohol.

Ban the cell phones while in motion.

A ban on cell phone use while driving would be unfair,..

I'm curious, how?

Because not all drivers are irresponsible while talking and driving at the same time. Limiting all for the inability of some just doesnt seem fair to me but thats just me. I guess there is no way to tell who is capable and who is not though.

my words. I think its the responsibility of the driver to pay attention to the road and its surroundings. If the driver is doing something other than this, than he is being irresponsible. Not everyone can multitask, but to punish those that can would be unjust. Like I said before, making a law to require a headset or handsfree set would be fine with me but a complete ban on car usage would not.

Not everyone can multitask, but to punish those that can would be unjust. I remember the same logic used by those that argued against stiffening drunk driving laws- "not everyone holds their liquor the same".

Anyways, with few exceptions, most cell phone bans allow the use of "hands free" operations. Certainly, no law will ensure 100% distraction free driving. However, too many individuals haven't a clue as to what is safe - e.g, the truck driver that collided with the school bus and the train operator. I think it's time for Georgia to pass legislation which acknowledges this issue.

It's more than being distracted. These people that text and chat while driving are likely the same asses that won't pull over for an emergency vehicle, or slow down for construction workers, or even pull aside in reverence and respect for a funeral procession. No, these people are more than distracted, they are egocentric - God knows this universe would not exist without them!

I take it then that you drive with one hand all of the time?

Or do you have a speakerphone in your ear playing hip-hop rail loude?

I dont really remember how I drive usually. I know I use one hand sometimes but just not to sure of the frequency in which I do. I do remember that turning generally requires two hands though!

As far as a speakerphone... Nah, I dont have one but I dont really talk on my phone while driving. Not because I think its dangerous, but because no ones calls me anymore. After so many years of not pickin up my phone when my friends have called, theyve decided it best for me to call them.

Honestly though, if the point you were trying to make is that difference between the two is having one hand on the wheel vs two all I can really say is Ive been driving for so long that it is really not noticable how many hands I have on the wheel except for when Im turning. If that was not your point though, sadly Im probably clueless as to what it was.

There are 300,000,001 more people in the USA than you!

My point is that NO ONE should drive with one hand! That has been taught for years!

Why would you complain if you don't do it?

Fact is that phones in your hand are dangerous while driving---there are enough other distraction without a verbal conversation with another human! Dialing (texting) is ridiculous!

and should they be caught texting while driving impound their vehicles and leave them stranded by the road. It wouldn't take many iterations for the lesson to be learned.

Just the other day I was almost T-boned by a lady chatting on her cell while simultaneously running a red light. After catching my breath, I realized yet another reason for licensed ownership and carrying of firearms.

It's simply becoming more dangerous every day that passes.

Submitted by Bonkers on Thu, 09/25/2008 - 3:30pm.

I hate to say it bluntly but cell phones are an addiction to many---maybe as badly as are alcoholics!

It is a psycho thing--serious.

They can not NOT have it on very long.

Do we hang them or treat them! Crazies are everywhere for some reason.

It would be easy to put a gadget in the vehicle where cells wouldn't
work if auto rolling!

We in the cycling community have seen terrible tragedies as a result of someone who is distracted while driving.

My wife and I have a disagreement regarding who are the worst drivers, men or women. We play a little game while traveling where we attempt to identify the driver by the erratic way they are driving. What we have found is that regardless of gender, those driving aimlessly on our highways are inevitably on their cell phones. The ones that we see that are texting are downright dangerous. They are all clueless when it comes to the unsafe situation they put themselves and all other drivers in when they are distracted by cell phones.

I personnally believe that only hands free cell phone use be allowed, with severe penalties for those caught texting etc.

While we are at it, how bout all them ladies on golf carts talking on cell phones while driving the paths with their kids in tow.

You and your bride play that game too, eh. I always get into trouble when I play it. Smiling

Anyways, you are right, distracted driving does place all road users at risk.
