Fulton County Firefighter Reduction In Force (R.I.F)

Many of you may not be aware of the fact that 44 of your Fulton County Firefighters may be laid off within the next month. Johns Creek will soon be an independent city and possibly forcing approximately 44 firefighter positions to be abolished. The firefighters now assigned within the Johns Creek area will be forced to be reassigned to South Fulton County. This will create a surplus of firefighters for the available positions in South Fulton County.

County Officials have stated there are a specific approved number of positions available. This meant that 44 of us (Fire Fighters) received a Reduction In Force (R.I.F.) letter. This letter means that there is a potential for those 44 firefighters to be laid off.

We went through this R.I.F. with the City of Sandy Springs. We lost a great number of firefighters through that process due to a host of reasons. The total number of firefighter positions has been basically cut in half due to the recent annexations of Sandy Springs, Milton, Fairburn, Palmetto, Chattahoochee Hills and soon Johns Creek.

If this R.I.F. takes place you may loose a great number of highly qualified and motivated firefighters. I cannot say that OUR services will be reduced or WE are in danger. I am simply saying, as a Firefighter and a tax payer of South Fulton County, I have concerns.

Contact your Commissioner with your concerns about the services you are entitled to.

When you have a county commissioner like Edwards who attempts to run the Fire Department and others as it was his own you will have and continue to have problems. He has a very arrogant attitude. He is a divider and does not have the citizens best interest at heart. FIND new commissioners.

It does seem the Commissioners feel as though they have our best interests in mind. I beg to differ. I have been through this Reduction In Force (R.I.F.) before and was nauseated by the actions, comments, intelligence and lack of concern by every one of them. They were not present at today’s R.I.F. meeting.

Firefighters met today to hear what the Fire Department and Fulton County Government had to offer us. They were very vague and political in their answers. They stated the R.I.F. will take place. We will find out on September 16 who will loose their job. The projected lay-off date is October 7th.

The hope is to keep key personnel such as supervisors, paramedics and technical rescue technicians in place. They said the number of firefighters in the force will not change for South Fulton County. I have strong concerns about the level of service we will be able to provide if these key personnel are let go.
