Disappointed in FairTaxers response

JeffC's picture

Did anyone else besides me notice that the new bloggers the FairTaxers brought in like dculling, ih2005, pianoguy, gilan, Ashford Schwall, and even the Co-chairman of the Fair Tax Coalition Leadership Gene Key and Don Williamson all seem to have vanished mysteriously instead of answering my questions?

FairTax Questions

I guess the Citizen blog was too tough for them. Probably when they posted their stuff elsewhere (and they have posted the same stuff with the same references all over numerous publications), nobody troubled themselves to actually read any of the publications to which they were referring to see if any of it made sense.

Since Huckabee seems to be imploding, having not won South Carolina, I guess the FairTax has had its moment in the sun. Certainly no one else will pick it up nationally.

So I guess the FairTaxers will never have to answer my questions. Alas, All that work for nothing.

But if anybody knows where they all ran off to, tell them we are still waiting for them over here on the Citizen’s blog.

Hi JeffC. I have a question for you.

Since democrats and republicans currently agree on the economic stimulus package, and that package is essentially a return of some of the tax money to the people in hopes that they will spend it, why wouldn't cutting taxes be a bipartisan economic stimulus too?

JeffC's picture
Submitted by JeffC on Mon, 01/28/2008 - 8:23pm.

Let me add an aside. If (and it won’t happen but.. if) the government were to actually cut expenditures by the same amount as the rebate, would it still be a stimulus or would it just be a wash?

However, to answer your specific question, and with the caveat that I am not and have never claimed to be an economist, I believe that cutting taxes would be an economic stimulus. In the case of this particular package I don’t believe the timing could be done fast enough but I assume we are just talking about a general rule here.

On the other hand (an old economist joke), cutting taxes while not reducing spending is just another way to shift taxation into the future. While being a short term stimulus, it is not a long term bargain because eventually we have to pay the taxes along with the accumulated interest.

For example, when Bush came into office the national debt was:

01/21/2001 $5,662,216,013,697

As of last week the national debt was:

01/25/2008 $9,202,516,936,166

The last average interest rate on the national debt I could find was 4.74% as of last October.

Therefore, the Bush administration has gone from a budget surplus to adding an additional $3,540,300,922,469 in debt so far. At 4.74% annual interest (simple) that leaves us with an additional INTEREST payment of $167,810,263,725 per year.

Put another way, the administration has added $459,754,147 per day to just the INCREASE in the INTEREST that we now owe. By the time President Bush leaves office, we will be spending a half billion dollars a day more per day in the increase in the interest than when he came into office.

Of course, many Republicans maintain, against both common sense and facts, that tax cuts pay for themselves when, in reality, they never have. Ever. Studies by the Congressional Budget Office, the Joint Committee on Taxation, and the US Treasury department itself show that tax cuts do not come anywhere close to paying for themselves over the long term.

http://www.cbpp.org/3-8-06tax.htm

I wish it were otherwise.

As you can see, the Bush tax cuts will pay for a little less than 10% of their costs through economic growth and revenue growth. This has not been as good as the Reagan tax cuts, the results of which were so dismal that Reagan reversed himself and implemented the two largest tax increases in history (up until that time).

Sadly, the Republican Party has now embraced supply side economics with the explicitly stated position; expressed by Dick Cheney when he told Secretary Paul O'Neill "deficits don't matter."

Democrats are the pay-as-you-go party, the policy implemented by Clinton which led to the budget surplus squandered by the Republican administration.

I sincerely hope that a new Democratic administration, if there is one, next year can overcome the storm of Republican opposition which will surely come, and will re-implement the “Pay-Go” system even if it limits the enormous growth of the government so dear to the Republican Party.

Sorry to be so long-winded.

Been busy, sorry.
I can't seem to find where you got that 11.55% producer price decrease and didn't see a link.

I did find the early work of Dr. Jorgenson that I think shows he included taxes as income to come up with the 22% figure.

I'm thinking I'm not going to find the paper with the 11.55% figure in it because I don't think anyone claimed that at AFFT.

Back to my loooong reply lol

The 11.5% quote came from the FairTax 2007 website at:

THE FAIR TAX 2007

It is the last sentence in the FIGURING COSTS section:

If businesses paid employees with gross pay, production costs would decrease by 11.55%, according to Arduin, Laffer, and Moore Econometrics.

Jeffc,
I am disappointed as well of the apparent demise of the fair tax, the more I read about it and understand it the more I like it. It is unfortunate that we are not willing to give this a shot, in the end it appears that hose that champion this proposal are outnumbered by those that are content with the “status quo’ and the unnecessary burden of the IRS.

President Bush announced the so called “economic stimulus” package recently. Well bucko, the easiest way to stimulate the economy at this time is for a temporary cut of ALL income taxes until we right his ship. A no brainer I say!

I have no confidence in the current presidential candidates, dems or reps, they don’t think out of the box and it will be business as usual in Washington as long as people such as Hillary and McCain are around.

would make sure that any economic stimulus package would put money in the hands of those who would be guaranteed to spend it (ie. individual taxpayers) and most certainly NOT in the hands of corporations to add the credit side of the balance sheet. Keep the faith.

Absolutely, I am keeping the faith. The middle class needs a break, not the corporations! Despite the current economic woes this remains the best economy in the world!

I think has more to do with him thinking the world is close to 6000 years old. Maybe a slight exageration, but none the less, you get the drift.

I've posted here asking you about alternatives to the current tax system, so far I've seen NOTHING proposed.

Actually, this election has already gone on TOO long. I see no reason to campaign for almost 2 years before the election. It didn't used to be that way.

Oh yeah, I still say you are crazy if you don't think the withholdings that come out of your paychecks aren't your monies. Smiling

He's a real lightweight(same as Obama for that matter) and I think his 15mins are up. His record as governor isn't what a lot of the fiscal conservatives(the few that remain) like to see and his blatant pandering to the evangelicals has sort of stopped working because he overdid it. The idea of merging the Bible and the US Constitution together is a very scary proposition.

I don't know how well he can do in the southern states, but Romney looks pretty strong. He's certainly well organized and has the $$$ to burn. The media is kind of ignoring him, but they might realize any day that he's leading in the delegate count pretty significantly as finishing 2nd a couple of times can be positive and that Nevada had more delegates at stake than South Carolina.Duh. National Review endorsed him, which sort of surprised me but they(NR staff) have never really like McCain and don't see any future in Thompson's campaign.

The Fair Tax bit is a great starting point for a meaningful discussion on major overhaul of a tax system in dire need of it, but it has to get past the "read the book" and "it's a tax increase on the middle class!!" arguments that have the conversation as a non-starter at this point.

...his blatant pandering to the evangelicals has sort of stopped working because he overdid it.

Some here may have noticed that I fell silent some weeks ago in my (earlier) defenses of his campaign.

Sadly, though I count myself an evangelical (the word has broader connotations than in popular usage), I must agree. He needlessly scared a lot of people with his religious rhetoric, aimed, I take it, at certain evangelicals, but overheard by everyone else. I really do not think he's a nut, but he has sounded like one on occasion.

McCain started looking better to me, but, apparently, not a lot of people agree. So I'm imagining Romney vs. Clinton. Why vote? They don't sell beer on election day. Think I'll stock up in advance, stay home, and make a complete fool of myself.

Vote for Hillary and Bill! Be on the side of your Presidents!
Health insurance and costs will improve, social security will improve, more corporate execs will go to jail, the war will end, the budget will balance and start the big pay-off, bums will be kicked out of education and we will again begin to know how to add two and two. Many will learn to write a sensible paragraph, and Harvard philosophy will again prevail.
The military will be doubled in numbers of soldiers, we will go to Mars and claim the raw materials, and, all goofball, selfish, irritating, so-called conservative columnists will be put to work teaching philosophy at Pepperdine.

I love music, my husband was in radio for over 30 years as operations manger and announcer- mostly secular- but his love CCM Music- which he did for about 12 years-

I don't have a dark side- you must not read or listen to what I send much, I think that is the first secular music I have sent to someone.

You know by now, I'm a Christian, no dark side, can't be, only light- I don't rant, I don't know how.

No ranting at my house except when I have to get after my son from time to time.

Glad you liked the song. It was a huge hit, not my favorite group- let's say we could have any cd free when he was in radio- no dark side music at our house. Let's say Ozzy and the rest can stay at their house.

I did forget I did sent Jackson 5 and Michael- I love them.

I thought we agreed about that paycheck money. No argument from me there.

Uh, in another post somewhere (not to you) I said that I don't have an alternative and am not going to propose one. Not my field. I pointed out though, that my raising questions to people with a pie-in-the-sky scheme involving amending the Constitution did not obligate me to develop an alternative to our 80,000 page tax code.

You're right about the election too.... Waaaayyyyy toooo looonnnggg!

As for Huckabee, you're right there too! But his support for the FairTax was its only chance of being seriously discussed. If he could not carry SC with its huge number of evangelicals, then where can he win? Georgia is now his only chance. He's running a low costs campaign (as those things go) and there is no reason for him to get out before Feb 5. And if he can pick up Ga. he might hang in until March 6. Why not?

Besides, the Beeper is for him.

Oh, and when they came up with that 6,000 year thing they assumed that the Judges had served consecutively even though the Book doesn't say that. There could have been other Judges whose terms were not mentioned. They may be off by several thousand years...

Secondly, your good Christian buddy violated Coffee Talk rule #3 by "outing" Main Stream's name...I notice you didn't jump all over your good Christian buddy bpr for that. I thought you said you were an equal opportunity sorta guy? I'm disappointed in you.

Finally, your good Christian buddy bpr announced today that anyone who disagreed with a Christian actually hated Christ. Do you agree or disagree with her claim?

I'm sure you would understand if I confessed that I skip over certain posters. Not many but a couple. I will not do that again. For this I humbly ask Main Stream's apology.

If my buddy Hutch is the one that violated Coffee Talk rule #3 then again I stand corrected and graciously request MS's forgiveness. If that's the case I'd have to admit it was a bad day for Git and I appreciate you pointing that out to me. I'll address this issue with Hutch myself...not that he has to answer to me.

Finally, your good Christian buddy bpr announced today that anyone who disagreed with a Christian actually hated Christ. Do you agree or disagree with her claim?

Oh heck no Basmati. That's an easy one to answer. I disagree with that whole heartedly. I disagree with many Christians and hating Christ is hardly my motive. There are several letters in the New Testament that Paul wrote, because he disagreed with many Christians. Hope that clarifies my stance on that my good Christian (I hope) brother.

Tell me, Oh Master of Situational Outrage, would YOU want to be associated with someone like that? I don't think I would.

I won't disown the fact that she probably is a sister in Christ. However, and like I have in the past, (search it yourself) I've asked her to kindly shut it up as I feared she was damaging her witness and betraying her objectives. Other than that all I can say is that I'm trying to be kind in that respect. Smiling

Now, if you don't mind I have two apologies to offer up.

I won't stop talking about God- just don't read it if you don't want to-

BTW ask you friend Hutch how horriable that I am plus my husband he met us. He will give you the scoop. Hutch is a gentleman that is honest in his opinion.

I ignore nasty talk from now on and nasty avatars- what some will do for attention.

I tried to be her friend, she refused.

Have a good day.

My quote was taken out of context- I said Denise it's not Christians they hate- but Christ. Meaning it's not myself nor Denise they dislike for being a Christian but it's Christ because we stand up for Him and try and live for Him, serve Him, and not ashamed of our belief.

It's in the bible.

_Main Stream gave out your name, I did not know your name. I wrote it like that to you because if you reread she posted it like (Hutch) and then your name. Not me, I wanted you to know.

You are not suppose to give out names. But she gave her name if it's her name when she was talking about her church.

I wanted you to know she gave it out. Not me.

BTW- you know yourself I did not know your name.

I just re-read your post and mine above it.

Just to clarify things: I don't blame Main Stream one iota for not wanting to meet with bpr. I don't condone Main Stream revealing personal information.

BPR's picture
Submitted by BPR on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 4:06pm.

Now why would Main Stream not want to have coffee with sweet Tug13, Denise and myself.

We are harmless- just trying to be her friend. Does she not want friend?

Is she your good friend, wife- you talk like you personally know her?

Both myself and Denise have tried- that's all we can do- she can remain on here and say whatever, I don't care.

You get involved in everything she says and does on here- sounds to me you all are friends.

I have my friends also, keep writing nasty blogs about me, I don't care- hit me with your best shot- give someone something to laugh and talk about.

give it a rest, beeper. You're really sounding desperate at this point: "Does she not want friend?" Sounds like that line from the Frankenstein movie, when he was searching high and low for a friend.

Start blogging about another issue. This one is dead in the water.

Hutch, seriously, you cannot be any worse than me with names.

I had to introduce a woman for an award that had recently gotten married. I kept telling myself over and over that Terri Jordan was now Terri Skajack...Terri Jordan was now Terri Skajack....

"Please give a round of applause to Terri Schiavo!"

(audience gasps) (Terri Schiavo of course was that poor brain-dead woman in Florida)

I truthfully don't know, I think the whole thing started when I told cy the flowers were ordered, I don't think there was anything malicious intended and I'm just going to call a do over.....DO OVER.....

Git Real's picture

So, I'm real confused here. BPR calls MS a butch. My buddy Hutch orders flowers for Cy. ;? BPR then outs MS who in turn outs Hutch who is digging in his pockets for change to pay for the flowers for Cy. To which Git jumps Main, while Sniffles jumps on Git's back engaging him with a strangle hold, while Git tazers Sniffles. Sniffles then slaps Hutch, while Cy breaks for supper, then Git apologizes to Main, while Sniffles breaks down and while weeping compliments Git, and then Hutch and Sniffles are on speaking terms and Git's now standing there scratching his head asking.... What just happened here? Puzzled :?

Can somebody please tell me what the heck is going on here? Shocked

Oh, I agree with you Hutch. Three wrongs don't make a right.

I think all posts that reveal personal information about a user should be deleted: bpr's, cyclist's and main stream's. There are too many people on this blog whom I consider borderline mentally unstable and would not want my personal information known to.

I was just dishin' out to y'all what you were disin' out to me.

Beeper, and her hansum huzbund bobcat, began the lovely barb throwing today. Must have been something she read or overheard in the Fayette Forum chatroom. She can't seem to keep her mouth shut.

Speak with her and calm her down. She, and he, are starting to sound like stalkers.

Since you think you know Hutch so well he will tell you bobcat is not my husband- my husband does not blog on here.

Hutch met my husband even likes him will even tell you that is is not bobcat. Ask-------

Sorry, I hurt your feelings, now the Christian thing to do is to forgiven me-

I refered to you as "Butch" because I thought you were a guy with all the vulgar things you talk about and say and your avatars speak for themself. I don't care what you do. Still want to have coffee? We have lots to talk about. The bible says to forgive me, ask your friend Yardman.

BTW I am not bpr's husband. Someone else husband. Thank God my wife does not talk to me like you did today- she would be gone.

I just don't appreciate people not being a lady like they should.

Stop the innocent act- your nasty avatars tell it all- Git you have seen them.

Online this person is nothing like Hutch, her buddy is Nickpickers-all of them- Grateful Doc.

Go ahead and read Git she talked to them all day.
