School system on right track with dress code
By CAL BEVERLY
Publisher

Our Letters pages have been filled in recent weeks with opinions about two separate but important issues involving the Fayette County school system: a $90 million special local option sales tax referendum for new school construction and a stricter dress code for students.

Their actions say board of education disdains environment
By DENNIS CHASE
Environmental Columnist

It has been several months since I discussed the many environmental issues involving our Fayette County Board of Education. Over the last year or two, I have had a number of direct encounters with a board member as well as staff responsible for construction and maintenance of the school grounds. I felt that these encounters have been mostly unproductive.

My wife Julie and I just got back from camp. We were program directors for a three-day “First Timers Camp” which consists of first through third graders. The point of the camp is to provide a pleasurable first-time experience for kids so they will come back to camp over and over.

Letters to the Editor

On dress code, board should listen to students

The letters from the students responding to the dress code proposals for Fayette County students in the July 28 edition of The Citizen were wonderful.

Board is already using scare tactics

Scare tactics already being used

Bonds are still better than SPLOST

This is about the selling of the school sales tax, and smarter alternatives.

'Elitist' wants to shut county's open doors

I read with great amusement the homilies spouted by Bob Craft in your editorial column. It seems he has proclaimed himself “king maker” in Fayette County and watchdog of our taxes. It is incredible how he picks on former county commissions and blames them for the growth in this county. You see, Mr. Craft would have preferred it if we had just shut the door 20 years ago and let no one else in. That, my friends, is the definition of an “elitist.”

Code will bring increased trouble

I am proud of the young people of our county who have used this forum to express their objection to the proposed dress code changes to be implemented in our schools. They have shown that they are literate, civic-minded citizens despite their preference for a style of clothing which I as an older citizen do not personally choose. These young men and women deserve to be listened to. We should appreciate them and applaud them for their merits, rather than seeking to alienate them because of their dress.

Board must remember different is not dangerous

The proposals recently presented to the Fayette County Board of Education by the Safety Task Force are so misguided and pompous, they should be laughable. However, the gravity inherent in the current path tread by this county is no laughing matter.

FCHS band leader makes lemonade out of disinvitation lemon

I must admit I was initially upset about the Fayette County High School Band being disinvited to play in the 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremonies and was against accepting a different itinerary until...

Congress msut investigate Chinese spying

The Congress should take immediate action to investigate the Clinton-Gore administration's relationship to the Communist Chinese government.

The kids aren't all right

I am grateful that the Fayette County Board of Education is looking out for the safety of its students, but the dress code is addressing the wrong issue. The problem is not the presence of weapons at school, but the students in the school.

Why don't schools punish rule-breakers

It has occurred to me that no comment us students make about the strain that these new dress code rules put on our wardrobes will sway the school board's decision. It doesn't matter if the new rules are ludicrous to us or not. You need a quick solution and this was all you can come up with.
