The kids aren't all right

I am grateful that the Fayette County Board of Education is looking out for the safety of its students, but the dress code is addressing the wrong issue. The problem is not the presence of weapons at school, but the students in the school.

Just because the students will not be able to bring weapons inside the school, it does not guarantee that a tragedy will not occur. There are many items within the school that could be used as weapons. No dress code will deter a dangerous student from committing a tragedy like Columbine.

I don't know what will prevent any more misfortunes, but I know that adopting an impractical dress code like the one proposed will not work. In fact, it may even trigger a student to carry out a dangerous plan.

We were not supposed to learn from all the tragedies that occurred last year that baggy clothing can lead to school tragedies. We were supposed to realize that there is something wrong in today's society that is causing all of these tragedies.
