John T. Haro officially was sworn in as the new Superintendent of the Fulton County School System on June 3. His first official day on the job began June 4.

School board approves budget

Board President Katie Reeves announced last week that the Fulton County Board of Education approved its tentative budget for 2003-04 which includes a 2.8 percent pay raise for employees with satisfactory evaluations and provides program enhancements for students.

Millage rates approved

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a revenue-neutral county-wide millage rate of 12.322 mills Wednesday. This includes 12.052 mills for the General Fund and .27 mills for the Bond Fund.

Area students receive Governor's Honors

Sixty-nine students representing eight Fulton County high schools have been selected for the 2003 Georgia Governor's Honors Program. The six-week summer program, held at Valdosta State University, is designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented students opportunities for enriching educational experiences not usually available during the regular school year.

Five area commissioners to meet

Members of five metro county commissions will meet together for the first time June 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The session will be held in the auditorium at the Georgia Power Company, 241 Ralph McGill Boulevard, Atlanta.

Cliftondale United Methodist announces upcoming events

Members of Cliftondale United Methodist Church will have a yard sale Saturday, June 21, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Among items featured will be free weights and an air conditioner. Hot dogs also will be for sale. Proceeds will benefit local church ministries.

Pitts attends conference in England

Fulton County District 2 Commissioner Robb Pitts was among a small group of Americans who attended a conference in England on "The Impact of the Media on the Politics of Our Time," last weekend.

Sorority awards scholarship, installs officers

The Atlanta Southern Crescent Alumnae Panhellenic Association has announced the winner of its first annual scholarship, Alison Michelle Fincher, who graduated last week as valedictorian of Henry County High School.

Yankees take McIntosh's Battle in third round

One of Fayette's top high school baseball players in 2003 has spent much of the past two days wearing the colors of perhaps the most recognized professional sports team in the United States, and it wasn't because he bought a cap and T-shirt at a sporting goods store.

East Coweta plays tonight for state title

About 1,000 fans are expected at Ike Aultman Field in Moultrie for tonight's doubleheader between East Coweta and Colquitt County for the AAAAA state baseball championship.

Starr's Mill team wins rec volleyball title

The Starr's Mill High School recreational volleyball team defeated Sandy Creek May 22 to be named Champions of the 2003 Ladies Volleyball League. The Fayette County Parks and Recreation Department hosts the Ladies Volleyball League each spring for ladies ages 15 and up.
